In the wake of the recent collapse of the four-lane Sultanganj-Aguwani Ghat Bridge in Bhagalpur, the Bihar Engineering Services Association (BESA) has urged for a comprehensive structural audit of all recently completed and under-construction bridges in the state. The BESA, representing members of the Bihar Engineering Services and other state government undertakings, has emphasized the need to identify any flaws, weaknesses, or deficiencies in these structures.

The tragic incident occurred three days ago when the Khagaria side of the Sultanganj-Aguwani Ghat Bridge gave way, marking another blow after pillar number 5 on the Sultanganj side had collapsed on April 30 last year. These incidents have raised concerns about the quality and safety standards of the bridges in Bihar, prompting the BESA to take action.

The BESA’s demand for a structural audit aims to assess the integrity of all recently completed bridges, as well as those currently under construction. By conducting a thorough examination, engineers and experts can identify any potential issues and recommend appropriate measures to rectify them. This proactive approach will ensure the safety of the public and prevent future mishaps.

Bihar, like many other states in India, has witnessed rapid infrastructure development in recent years. Bridges play a crucial role in connecting communities, facilitating transportation, and promoting economic growth. However, it is essential to maintain high standards of construction and regular inspections to ensure the safety and durability of these vital structures.

The collapse of the Sultanganj-Aguwani Ghat Bridge has brought the issue of bridge safety to the forefront. The BESA’s call for a structural audit is a timely and responsible step toward addressing this concern. By scrutinizing the design, materials, and construction techniques used in these bridges, engineers can identify potential vulnerabilities that may compromise their structural integrity.

Furthermore, the audit will serve as a valuable learning experience for future infrastructure projects. It will enable engineers to identify common pitfalls, design flaws, or construction errors that may have contributed to the collapse of the Sultanganj-Aguwani Ghat Bridge. By incorporating these lessons into future bridge construction endeavors, the state can ensure higher quality and safer infrastructure.

The government of Bihar should take this demand seriously and collaborate with the BESA to conduct a comprehensive and independent structural audit. It is crucial to involve qualified engineers and experts with expertise in bridge design and construction to carry out the assessments. Additionally, the audit process should be transparent, with the findings and recommendations made available to the public.

In the interest of public safety, the government should allocate the necessary resources to fund the structural audit. The expenses incurred in the process will pale in comparison to the potential loss of lives and economic consequences that could arise from future bridge failures. Investing in bridge safety now will yield long-term benefits for the state and its citizens.

The collapse of the Sultanganj-Aguwani Ghat Bridge is a wake-up call for Bihar and other states across India to reevaluate the standards and protocols governing bridge construction. The incident highlights the importance of stringent quality control measures, regular inspections, and adherence to safety regulations.

By heeding the BESA’s demand for a structural audit, Bihar can demonstrate its commitment to public safety and set an example for other states to follow. The findings of the audit should inform policy decisions and lead to the implementation of stricter regulations to ensure the construction of safe and reliable bridges.

The collapse of the Sultanganj-Aguwani Ghat Bridge in Bhagalpur has prompted the Bihar Engineering Services Association to call for a comprehensive structural audit of bridges in the state.
