Uzra Zeya, a senior U.S. diplomat responsible for democracy and human rights, is set to embark on a visit to India and Bangladesh, starting this Saturday. Her primary objective during the trip is to engage with civil society organizations, emphasizing freedom of expression and the inclusion of women, girls, and vulnerable groups, particularly religious and ethnic minorities.

According to a release by the State Department on Friday, Zeya will also hold meetings with senior government officials in India to discuss the strengthening partnership between the United States and India. This visit comes as a testament to the ongoing commitment of both nations to deepen their ties.

Uzra Zeya, who serves as the Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, also holds the position of U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. Her visit to India and Bangladesh, scheduled from July 8 to 14, underscores the significance of democracy and human rights in both countries.

During her time in India, Zeya plans to engage in meaningful discussions with civil society organizations. The focus will be on promoting freedom of expression, an essential pillar of any democratic society. By emphasizing this fundamental right, the diplomat aims to encourage open dialogue, empower individuals to express their opinions, and foster an environment of inclusivity and respect for diverse perspectives.

Furthermore, Zeya’s visit aims to address the inclusion of women, girls, and vulnerable groups in Indian society. By focusing on these marginalized populations, including religious and ethnic minorities, she aims to promote equality and advocate for their rights and well-being. This emphasis on inclusion aligns with the broader goals of advancing gender equality and social justice, core values upheld by both the United States and India.

In addition to her engagement with civil society organizations, Uzra Zeya will hold meetings with senior government officials in India. These discussions will revolve around the deepening partnership between the two countries. The United States and India have been working closely in recent years to strengthen their alliance, particularly in the areas of security, trade, and defense cooperation. Zeya’s visit serves as an opportunity to further enhance this partnership, solidifying the shared values of democracy, human rights, and regional stability.

After concluding her visit to India, Zeya will travel to Bangladesh, another country in the region with significant importance for democracy and human rights. In Bangladesh, she will continue her engagements with civil society organizations, emphasizing the inclusion of marginalized groups and the promotion of freedom of expression. Bangladesh has made significant strides in recent years towards promoting human rights, and Zeya’s visit seeks to support these efforts while identifying areas where further progress can be made.

Uzra Zeya’s visit to India and Bangladesh reflects the continued commitment of the United States to promote democracy, human rights, and inclusive societies. By engaging with civil society organizations and senior government officials, she aims to strengthen partnerships, encourage dialogue, and advocate for the rights of marginalized communities. This visit underscores the importance of fostering democratic values and protecting human rights, values that both the United States and its partners in the region hold dear.
