Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that security forces intercepted 13 foreign nationals who attempted to enter India illegally through the state. Authorities pushed them back across the international border after completing due procedures.

Border Districts on High Alert

Several districts of Assam share a long international boundary with Bangladesh. These include Sribhumi, Cachar, Dhubri, and South Salmara-Mankachar. Together, the districts account for around 267.5 kilometres of the India–Bangladesh border.

Given the porous nature of certain stretches, the state has stepped up vigilance along sensitive border areas. Security agencies have intensified patrolling to curb unlawful cross-border movement.

Integrated Check Posts Strengthen Monitoring

An Integrated Check Post (ICP) operates at Sutarkandi in Sribhumi district, serving as a key legal entry and exit point along the India–Bangladesh border in Assam. Two other ICPs function in the Northeast—Dawki in Meghalaya and Akhaura in Tripura.

Assam also hosts an ICP at Darranga along the India–Bhutan border. Authorities use these check posts to regulate cross-border movement and ensure compliance with immigration rules.

Police and BSF Coordination

Earlier, Assam Police said it continues to work closely with the Border Security Force (BSF) to prevent illegal entry of non-Indian nationals from Bangladesh. Officials said coordination has become more critical following political developments in the neighbouring country last year.

Joint patrols, intelligence sharing, and increased surveillance remain part of the strategy to secure the border.

Clear Entry Rules for Indian Citizens

Officials clarified that Indian passport holders will be allowed to return from Bangladesh through designated and notified entry points in Assam. Authorities have urged travellers to use legal routes and follow immigration guidelines.

The state government has reiterated that it will maintain strict enforcement while ensuring legitimate travel and trade continue without disruption.
