Gilbertson Sangma, a legendary name in Assam football, passed away on April 4, 2026, at the age of 71. Known as the “Man with the Golden Boot,” Gilbertson Sangma played a pivotal role in shaping the football landscape of the state and inspired generations of players.

Early Life of Gilbertson Sangma

Gilbertson Sangma was born on April 12, 1955, in Dibrugarh, Assam. He began his football journey at the Assam Police Reserve in Dergaon, where he developed his skills and passion for the sport. His dedication and natural talent soon set him apart from his peers.


Gilbertson Sangma’s Rise in State Football

Sangma made his senior debut in 1973, representing Golaghat in the Inter-District Football Championships. His impressive performance earned him a place in the Assam team for the Santosh Trophy.

He represented Assam for seven seasons between 1973 and 1980. One of the defining moments of Gilbertson Sangma’s career came in the 1974–75 Santosh Trophy when he scored a decisive goal against Kerala, helping Assam reach the quarter-finals.


Success with Assam Police and Major Titles

Gilbertson Sangma joined Assam Police and became a key player for Assam Police AC. He led the team to several victories in prestigious tournaments, including the Bordoloi Trophy, where he scored the winning goal in the 1981 final against Dempo SC.

Additionally, he played crucial roles in winning the Independence Day Cup and ATPA Shield. His consistent performances cemented his reputation as one of Assam’s finest footballers.


International Career of Gilbertson Sangma

At the international level, Gilbertson Sangma represented India in 1975. He participated in friendly matches in Indonesia and Thailand, bringing recognition to Assam football on a broader stage.


Life After Retirement

After retiring as a senior official from Assam Police, Gilbertson Sangma remained actively involved in football activities in Guwahati. He mentored young players and contributed significantly to grassroots football development.

The football fraternity expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Gilbertson Sangma. NorthEast United FC condoled his death and extended heartfelt sympathies to his family. His contributions to the sport will continue to inspire future generations.
