CID Launches Special Cell for Election Monitoring

In a proactive step, the Assam Police established a specialized unit under the CID on March 20 to monitor social media platforms. The cell focuses on identifying fake news, objectionable posts, and content that could incite unrest during the sensitive election period.

Special Director General of Police (CID), Munna Prasad Gupta, confirmed that the unit has already shown effective results within a short period of operation.

Swift Action on Fake Content

According to officials, the cell has handled 17 cases involving 27 social media profiles across multiple platforms. Notably, authorities achieved a 100% content removal rate in these cases.

Moreover, the police registered one FIR and arrested the primary accused by March 29, highlighting the administration’s zero-tolerance approach towards misinformation during elections.

Proactive Surveillance and Complaint Tracking

The Assam election fake news monitoring system works on both reactive and proactive mechanisms. Authorities track complaints received from central and district levels while also independently scanning social media platforms.

Most of the flagged content involved attempts to defame political candidates or damage their public image. Officials believe such posts can influence voters and disrupt the democratic process if left unchecked.

Legal Framework and Enforcement

The police are taking action under strict legal provisions, including the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. These laws empower authorities to act swiftly against offenders.

Additionally, law enforcement agencies can trace IP addresses with the help of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology through its Sahyog Portal. This ensures that those responsible for spreading harmful content can be identified and prosecuted.

Officials also warned that social media platforms failing to comply with takedown requests may lose their safe harbour protection under Indian law.

Coordination with Election Authorities

The monitoring initiative is aligned with guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India regarding fake news and election integrity.

Police officials have conducted meetings with nodal officers of various social media platforms to ensure quicker responses to takedown requests. This coordination is expected to improve efficiency in handling election-related misinformation.

Evidence Preservation and Compliance

Authorities are not only removing harmful content but also preserving it digitally for legal proceedings. After identifying such posts, formal notices are issued to platforms seeking user data and ensuring compliance within prescribed timelines.

This structured approach ensures that offenders are held accountable while maintaining transparency in the enforcement process.

Conclusion

As elections approach, Assam election fake news monitoring has emerged as a crucial step to safeguard democratic integrity. With advanced surveillance, strict legal action, and coordination with national authorities, the Assam Police aim to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.
