Chief Minister Launches Major Agricultural Initiatives
Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated several agriculture-focused programmes designed to support farmers and strengthen Mizoram’s rural economy.
The launch included the Mizo Ginger USP Mission Projects, the PM-AASHA Price Support Scheme for selected crops, and an awareness workshop on ginger exports organized in collaboration with the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL).
Addressing farmers, officials, and stakeholders, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of agriculture as a key driver of economic development in the state.
Mizoram Ginger Recognized as State’s Unique Selling Proposition
Lalduhoma described ginger as one of Mizoram’s most valuable agricultural products. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has already recognized Mizoram ginger as the state’s Unique Selling Proposition (USP).
According to the Chief Minister, Mizoram ginger may be smaller in size compared to varieties grown elsewhere. However, its pharmaceutical-grade quality gives it a significant advantage in domestic and international markets.
He emphasized that farmers should focus not only on selling raw ginger but also on processing and value addition. As a result, producers can earn higher returns while building a more sustainable agricultural sector.
₹30.13 Crore Ginger Processing Project Announced
To support value addition, the state government has launched a Sustainable Cultivation and Post-Harvest Management Project with assistance from the Ministry of DoNER.
Under the project, authorities will establish four modern ginger processing units in Champhai district. The initiative has received financial support of ₹30.13 crore and aims to transform the ginger value chain in the state.
The project is expected to benefit approximately 20,000 ginger-growing households. Furthermore, it will create around 100 direct employment opportunities, generating additional economic benefits for local communities.
The Chief Minister thanked Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for supporting the project through the Ministry of DoNER.
Focus on Exports and Value-Added Products
The Mizoram Government plans to expand the presence of its GI-tagged ginger in national and international markets.
Officials are exploring opportunities to manufacture high-value products such as ginger oil and other processed goods. Consequently, farmers may gain access to premium markets and achieve better price realization.
To improve export readiness, the government has partnered with the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL). The organization will provide training on export procedures, quality standards, documentation requirements, and market access strategies.
Through these efforts, the government hopes to create a stronger export ecosystem for agricultural products from Mizoram.
Price Support Scheme Introduced for Three Crops
The Chief Minister also announced the implementation of the PM-AASHA Price Support Scheme for Arhar (Tur), Sesame, and Sunflower from the current harvest season.
The scheme aims to protect farmers from market fluctuations and ensure fair returns for their produce.
The government has fixed the following Minimum Support Prices (MSP):
- Arhar (Tur): ₹84.50 per kg
- Sesame: ₹103.46 per kg
- Sunflower: ₹83.43 per kg
Under the scheme, procurement will take place through designated centres operated by NAFED in partnership with the Mizoram Agricultural Marketing Board.
Additionally, authorities will transfer payments directly into farmers’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring transparency and timely payments.
Greater Security for Farmers
Lalduhoma stated that the inclusion of three additional crops under the Central Government’s price support programme provides stronger market assurance for farmers.
The initiative will reduce uncertainty during harvest seasons and encourage farmers to increase production. Moreover, it will help create a more stable agricultural economy in the state.
The Chief Minister urged government agencies, farmer groups, cooperative societies, and other stakeholders to work together to ensure the successful implementation of the schemes.
Strong Participation from Farming Community
Around 250 participants attended the programme, including farmers, Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) representatives, cooperative society members, and government officials from different districts.
Following the inauguration ceremony, participants took part in the NCEL Ginger Export Awareness Workshop, where experts shared information on export opportunities and market development strategies.
