Tezpur Litchi Reaches Global Markets

During the event, authorities shipped one tonne of assorted litchi varieties to Dubai. Furthermore, they exported 600 kilograms of litchi to Singapore, marking another milestone for Assam’s fruit industry.
Officials Flag Off Consignments
Sonitpur District Commissioner Anand Kumar Das formally flagged off the export consignments. Tezpur MLA Prithviraj Rabha, District Agriculture Officer Pradeep Kumar Talukdar, Sadar Agriculture Officer Zakir Hussain, and other officials attended the event.
Officials stated that the exports demonstrate the increasing popularity of Tezpur litchi in both domestic and international markets.
Strong Demand for Premium Litchi
Tezpur litchi is known for its rich flesh, vibrant colour, and distinctive taste. As a result, the fruit continues to attract buyers from across India and abroad.
At the festival, the highly sought-after Bombay variety sold for between ₹40 and ₹50 per fruit. Consequently, vendors recorded sales exceeding ₹4 lakh in a single day.
A Century-Old Legacy
The history of litchi cultivation in Tezpur dates back to 1923. Padmanath Gohain Baruah, a noted litterateur and former chairman of Tezpur Municipality, established some of the area’s earliest orchards.
Today, more than 150 farmers cultivate litchis across nearly 400 bighas of land, according to the Agnigarh Agricultural Producers Group.
The festival also showcased several popular varieties, including Chahi, Bilati, Bombaiya, Piyaji, Chinese, Rongiya, Kath Bombaiwa, and Elaichi litchis.
