Assam-Arunachal border tension has resurfaced in Lower Siang after firing during a confrontation at Mingmang Basti left at least 18 people injured, four critically, on Monday. The incident has renewed concerns in an area where boundary disagreements have remained sensitive despite years of talks.

According to reports, the confrontation followed a dispute over alleged land encroachment. Unidentified persons from the Arunachal Pradesh side allegedly opened fire, while the exact sequence of events and identities of those responsible remain under investigation.

Assam-Arunachal border tension leaves 18 injured

The firing was reported at Mingmang Basti, near the inter-state boundary in the Lower Siang-Dhemaji sector. Eighteen people were injured, and four of them were shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh after being critically hurt.

India Today NE reported that the latest confrontation followed the alleged shooting of a Mising youth near Kangku Circle in Lower Siang. The youth had reportedly gone missing and was later found with a leg injury. However, the identity of the alleged shooter and the circumstances of that incident have not yet been established.

The reported shooting was followed by a confrontation involving people from Assam’s Dhemaji district and Lower Siang. There were also reports of heightened tension between members of the Mising and Galo communities. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Local residents have been urged to remain calm as officials work to prevent further clashes.

Police reinforcements reach sensitive area

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the chief secretaries of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh were discussing the situation. He also said the directors general of police of both states were coordinating efforts to reduce tensions.

Assam Police reinforcement has reached the affected location, according to reports. Sarma said Assam would not surrender its territorial interests. At the same time, authorities are focusing on preventing the confrontation from spreading.

The immediate priority is to maintain peace, protect residents and establish the facts behind the firing. Therefore, the response from police and district administrations is expected to remain focused on de-escalation and investigation.

Assam-Arunachal border dispute has a long history

The latest incident comes against the backdrop of the long-running Assam-Arunachal border dispute. The two states share an approximately 800-km boundary, with several areas historically remaining contested.

In recent years, both governments have moved towards negotiated settlement and joint demarcation. In June 2025, regional committees representing Assam’s Dhemaji and Arunachal’s Lower Siang and East Siang districts discussed 13 unresolved issues and expressed hope of finding an amicable solution.

That process continued in 2026. A joint boundary survey began in May, with officials from both states and the Survey of India taking part. The exercise used geospatial coordinates to identify and verify boundary locations. The second stretch, covering Telam to the Seren Agma river in Lower Siang, was completed in early May.

The survey was intended to provide a transparent and scientific basis for settling remaining boundary questions. However, the latest confrontation shows that local disputes can still create tension before the wider demarcation process is complete.

Assam-Arunachal border talks face a fresh test

The new violence is a setback for efforts to maintain calm along sensitive sections of the boundary. However, it does not by itself establish that the two state governments are directly responsible for the firing.

Both sides now face pressure to contain local tensions while keeping the broader dialogue alive. Clear communication between police, district administrations and community representatives will be important in preventing further confrontations.

The Assam-Arunachal border issue has previously seen clashes and firing in disputed areas. A 2023 incident in the Dhemaji-Lower Siang sector left two people dead and two others injured, underlining the risks that unresolved local claims can pose.

For residents living near the boundary, the immediate concern is safety and stability. As investigations continue, authorities will need to establish who opened fire, what triggered the confrontation and whether any further action is required.

The latest episode also highlights why the ongoing demarcation process matters. A clearly verified boundary, combined with regular coordination between local officials and communities, could reduce the scope for misunderstandings and prevent disputes from turning violent.
