Imphal, August 29: The Manipur People’s Party (MPP) staged a protest at its Imphal headquarters on Saturday over the reported killing of four unarmed Naga civilians in Kangpokpi district. The incident reportedly took place along the Imphal-Tamenglong Road on August 27 and also left another person seriously injured. The MPP demanded an immediate investigation, arrests and prosecution of those responsible. The party also called for stronger civilian security and accountability from the state government.

MPP Condemns Reported Civilian Killings

The MPP demanded an independent, high-level and time-bound Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the latest incident.
According to the party, the investigation should establish the complete chain of responsibility. It also called for probes into earlier unresolved cases involving civilian killings, abductions and attacks.
The party said authorities must apply the law equally to all armed groups and individuals involved in violence against civilians.
MPP Demands Review of SoO Arrangement
The party also called for the immediate abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement with Kuki armed groups by the Centre and the Manipur government.
The MPP further accused authorities of providing what it described as patronage, protection and preferential treatment to armed groups. It demanded an end to any form of impunity for groups allegedly involved in attacks on civilians.
These allegations reflect the MPP’s political position. Authorities will need to establish individual responsibility through a lawful investigation.
Call for Better Security and IDP Rehabilitation
The MPP demanded stronger and permanent security for civilians across Manipur. It placed particular emphasis on vulnerable areas and roads where armed attacks could occur.
Meanwhile, the party raised concerns about the state’s displacement crisis. It demanded safe and sustainable rehabilitation for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The MPP also called for the safe return of displaced families to their original homes, along with adequate security and government assistance.

The party questioned the accountability of Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam.
The MPP said both leaders must fulfil their constitutional and administrative responsibilities to protect citizens.
“If you cannot protect Manipuris, resign,” the party said, calling on the Chief Minister and Home Minister to accept responsibility if the government fails to prevent killings, abductions and armed attacks.
