Rahul Gandhi has called for swift justice for Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh, who died after an alleged assault outside his home in southeast Delhi. Gandhi said the incident raises serious questions about violence and the safety of people from the Northeast in the capital.

Rahul Gandhi also criticised what he described as a growing culture in which powerful people use violence against others. He said those responsible must face the law, while the investigation should establish the facts without prejudice.

Rahul Gandhi seeks swift probe into Singh’s death

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, reacted to Singh’s death after the 55-year-old musician was allegedly attacked in Kilokari village on September 6. Police said the incident followed a dispute over noise outside his residence.

According to reports, Singh went downstairs at about 11.30 pm to object to the disturbance. The situation allegedly escalated, and he was assaulted by a group of men. He was taken to Holy Family Hospital but later died from his injuries.

Rahul Gandhi said justice must be delivered quickly. He also linked the case to broader concerns about the safety and dignity of people from Northeast India living in Delhi.

What happened to Chongtham Vikram Singh

Singh was a recognised figure in Manipur’s rock music movement and had spent years working as a guitarist and teacher. He had played with bands including Phoenix and Eastern Dark before building a career as a music educator in Delhi.

The assault has led to demands for a transparent investigation. Police have arrested seven adults and apprehended a juvenile in connection with the case. Authorities are examining CCTV footage and other evidence as part of the investigation.

Police have not established a racial motive so far. However, organisations representing Northeast communities have urged investigators to examine every possible angle, including whether discrimination played any role.

Rahul Gandhi flags concerns over violence

Rahul Gandhi’s response has added to a wider political and public reaction to Singh’s death. He questioned how a disagreement over noise could turn into fatal violence and argued that power or group strength must never become a reason to attack another person.

His remarks came as community organisations and political leaders called for accountability. The family has also made clear that it wants justice through a fair process rather than revenge.

The case has renewed discussion about the experiences of people from the Northeast in Delhi. Community representatives have said that safety, dignity and equal treatment should not depend on a person’s region or identity. They have also called for an investigation that is independent, transparent and capable of addressing concerns raised by the community. Meanwhile, the incident has drawn attention beyond Manipur, with calls for institutions to respond firmly when violence is alleged.

Family seeks justice, not revenge

Singh’s wife, Joshna Chongtham, has appealed for an impartial investigation and accountability. She has described the loss as devastating for the family and stressed that the priority is justice.

Rahul Gandhi’s call for action comes alongside similar demands from community groups and political figures. Several organisations have held protests and candlelight gatherings in Delhi, while people in Manipur have mourned Singh’s death.

The musician was cremated in Imphal on September 9, drawing family members, artists and supporters from across the region. His death has also prompted renewed calls for stronger protection for Northeast residents in other parts of the country.

Investigation remains the key test

Rahul Gandhi has urged authorities to ensure that the case is investigated promptly and fairly. The police investigation will now determine how the confrontation unfolded, who was involved and what led to Singh’s fatal injuries.

For the family, the immediate demand is accountability. For the wider Northeast community, the case has become a test of whether concerns about safety and discrimination are taken seriously.

Overall, the focus remains on establishing the facts and allowing due process to take its course. Singh’s death has left the music community grieving, while the calls for justice continue in Delhi and Manipur.
