Tamenglong firing has left a Kuki woman dead and her husband and son injured after armed men attacked their home in Tollen village in Manipur’s Tamenglong district early Sunday. Police said the attackers were unidentified, while the circumstances and motive remain under investigation.

The incident was reported in the remote Tousem area at about 4 am, according to local reports. The woman, identified as Lhingjangai Singsit in reports, died after suffering gunshot injuries. Her husband, Seineh Singsit, and their youngest son were also wounded.

Tamenglong firing leaves family injured

The attack took place at the family’s home in Tollen, also spelled Tolen, a remote settlement in western Tamenglong. The village is near NH-37, the highway connecting Imphal with Jiribam, although difficult terrain and poor road links can make access to the area challenging.

Police said the woman was killed during the attack, while her husband and son sustained bullet injuries. Reports said the child was shot in the arm, with another bullet reportedly lodged in his buttocks.

The couple’s three children were initially unaccounted for after the firing. However, local sources later said all three were traced. The family’s condition and the exact details of their medical treatment were not immediately available in official accounts.

Police probe Tamenglong firing

Police have not identified those responsible for the attack. Hindustan Times reported that officers were yet to ascertain who carried out the assault, and no local armed group had claimed responsibility.

Meanwhile, local residents alleged that cadres of the NSCN-IM and Naga Village Guards were involved. However, the allegation has not been independently verified. It is therefore too early to link the attack to any particular organisation.

Additional security forces have been deployed in the area, according to police. Authorities are expected to focus on establishing how the attackers reached the village, what happened during the firing and who was responsible.

Tamenglong firing raises security concerns

The latest attack has renewed concern over security in isolated parts of Tamenglong. The district and areas along the Imphal-Tamenglong road have witnessed sporadic firing and clashes amid continuing tensions between Kuki-Zo and Naga communities.

The remote location of Tollen adds another challenge. Poor connectivity and difficult terrain can delay emergency medical assistance and evacuation, making security incidents more difficult for residents and authorities to manage.

The incident also comes amid recent violence in parts of Manipur. However, there is no official indication that Sunday’s attack was connected to any other recent incident. Investigators will need to establish the facts before drawing such links.

Kuki Black Day adds sensitivity

The Tamenglong firing occurred on September 13, a day observed by the Kuki community as Sahnit Ni, or Kuki Black Day. The observance remembers people killed during the Kuki-Naga violence of the 1990s.

The date also marks the anniversary of the 1993 Joupi massacre, in which scores of Kuki civilians were killed in areas of Tamenglong and the then Senapati district. Kuki organisations have previously alleged NSCN-IM involvement in those killings.

The timing of Sunday’s attack has therefore added sensitivity to an already tense situation. Still, the circumstances surrounding the latest shooting must be established through an impartial investigation rather than assumptions based on the date.

Calls for an impartial Tamenglong firing probe

The Kaimai Village Authority condemned the attack and called for a thorough and impartial investigation. It described the incident as a possible attempt to create suspicion and division between communities, while appealing against rumours and provocation.

The Kuki Youth Organisation Women’s Council also condemned the reported attack. It called for the identification and prosecution of those responsible through credible evidence and due process, along with stronger preventive security measures.

Overall, the Tamenglong firing has raised fresh questions about civilian safety in remote areas of Manipur. For residents of Tollen, the immediate priority is security and medical care. For authorities, the next step is to determine the attackers and circumstances through a credible investigation. Clear findings will also be important to prevent misinformation and reduce further tension in the area locally.
