Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sought a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation into the death of 20-year-old student Himashri Boro. Boro, a student from Kamrup district, went missing while returning to Assam by train from Visakhapatnam. Her body was later recovered from a forested area near Malayapuram in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district.

Himashri Boro Went Missing During Train Journey

According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s letters, Himashri Boro had travelled to Visakhapatnam as part of a dance troupe. She was returning to Guwahati when she boarded the Dibrugarh Vivek Express at Visakhapatnam on October 5.

On October 6, her family reportedly received a distressing message from Boro. She expressed fear about the presence of several men around her, according to details cited by the chief minister.

Boro subsequently went missing during the journey. Her bag was later found inside the train’s S2 coach, raising further questions about what happened after she boarded the train.

Body Recovered in Andhra Pradesh

Boro’s body was subsequently recovered from a forested area near Malayapuram in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh.

The circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death have raised concerns over possible foul play. However, the exact cause and circumstances of her death will have to be established through the ongoing investigation.

Assam CM Seeks Detailed Investigation

Following the incident, Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

Sarma urged the Andhra Pradesh government to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the sequence of events. This includes Boro’s boarding of the train, her disappearance and the circumstances leading to the recovery of her body.

The Assam chief minister also requested railway authorities to investigate events that occurred during Boro’s train journey.

Senior Assam Police Officer Sent to Andhra Pradesh

Sarma said the Assam government has deputed a senior Assam Police officer to Andhra Pradesh. The officer will coordinate with local law enforcement agencies and assist in efforts to establish the facts surrounding the case.

The chief minister also expressed condolences to Boro’s family and said the incident had caused deep grief and concern across Assam.

He stressed that anyone found responsible for the death must be identified and brought to justice at the earliest.

Assam Government Raises Passenger Safety Concerns

The case has also highlighted concerns about the safety of passengers travelling across states by train. Sarma said the safety of people from Assam remains a priority even when they are outside the state.
