Mukul Sangma firmly rejected speculation about a possible move to the BJP or another national party. He said the BJP could not break the TMC in Meghalaya.

The former chief minister also made his political position clear. He stated that he was not joining the BJP or any other national party.

His comments come at a time when questions have emerged about the TMC’s future in Meghalaya. Nevertheless, Sangma maintained that the party remained difficult to weaken in the state.

Sangma Avoids Confirming BJP Outreach

When reporters asked whether the BJP had approached him, Sangma did not confirm or deny any contact. Instead, he said he would not disclose such information, even if an approach had taken place.

He suggested that political developments in other states could offer clues about similar situations in Meghalaya. However, he declined to provide a direct answer about any alleged discussions with the BJP.

Sangma’s response has added to the speculation surrounding the state’s political landscape. Still, he did not confirm any specific attempt to persuade him to leave the TMC.

TMC’s Position in Meghalaya

The speculation comes against the backdrop of the TMC’s rise in Meghalaya politics. In 2021, several former Congress leaders, including Mukul Sangma, joined the party.

Their move helped the TMC emerge as the principal opposition force in the state. However, the party currently has five MLAs in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly.

The party’s political standing remains an important factor in discussions about the state’s opposition politics. Sangma’s latest remarks indicate that he intends to remain with the TMC rather than join a national party.
