Home Ministry Plans to Reduce Visa Categories

The Union Home Ministry has initiated a comprehensive review of India’s existing visa framework to simplify the classification system.

Under the proposed changes, the government plans to reduce the main visa categories from 13 to nine. Similarly, officials aim to bring down the number of sub-categories from 49 to 23.

The proposed restructuring will reduce the number of classifications under which authorities issue visas. Consequently, applicants could find it easier to identify the appropriate visa category for their travel or other purposes.

Visa Application Forms May Become 70% Shorter

One of the major highlights of the proposed reform involves simplifying visa application forms.

According to officials, the government plans to remove nearly 70 per cent of the existing form fields. The review will focus on eliminating overlapping, repetitive and unnecessary information requirements.

As a result, applicants may have to provide significantly less information while completing their visa applications. This change could also make the overall application process less complicated.

Review of Visa Manual 2019

The proposed reforms form part of a wider review of the Visa Manual, 2019.

Officials held a meeting in August to discuss amendments to different chapters and Appendices I and II of the existing manual.

During the meeting, participants agreed on the need to streamline the visa framework and remove unnecessary procedural requirements.

Furthermore, the government intends to align the revised system with international practices and introduce the proposed changes across all visa categories and sub-categories.

Proposed Reforms Aim to Improve Efficiency

The planned overhaul could make India’s visa system more accessible and efficient for applicants.

By reducing categories and simplifying application forms, the government hopes to minimise confusion and unnecessary documentation.

However, officials have not specified a final implementation date for the proposed changes. The reforms remain part of the ongoing review process.
