The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy rainfall in Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, and Lakshadweep due to the strengthening of the ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm Biparjoy. The cyclone is predicted to intensify further in the next 24 hours and move in a north-northeast direction, posing potential risks to the affected regions.
In light of the approaching cyclone, the IMD has advised fishermen in Kerala and Karnataka to refrain from venturing out to sea. This cautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of the fishermen and avoid any unforeseen accidents or emergencies that may arise from the cyclonic conditions. The authorities have also issued a yellow alert for several districts in Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, and Kannur. This alert indicates the likelihood of heavy rainfall in these areas over the next three days.
Anticipating the impact of Cyclone Biparjoy, Tithal Beach in Valsad, located on the Arabian Sea coast, has been closed to tourists until June 14 as a precautionary measure. The area has already experienced high waves, signaling the intensification of the cyclonic conditions. Tehsildar TC Patel in Valsad has confirmed that fishermen have been advised to stay away from the sea, and preparations have been made to shift residents to a safer location near the seashore if necessary. Shelters have been set up to accommodate people who may be affected by the cyclone’s potential consequences.
Looking at the broader forecast, the IMD predicts light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in the southern states of India over the next five days. Heavy rainfall is expected to occur at isolated places in Kerala and Coastal Karnataka over the next three days, with Lakshadweep experiencing heavy rainfall over the next two days.
Moving to the northeastern region of India, light to moderate scattered rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is likely over North East India in the next five days. On June 9, very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Additionally, Assam and Meghalaya are likely to experience very heavy rainfall on June 12 and 13, with isolated heavy rainfall occurring in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya over the next five days. Manipur and Mizoram can expect isolated heavy rainfall on June 10 and 12.
Furthermore, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to witness very heavy rainfall at isolated places from June 11 to 13. Andaman & Nicobar Islands will experience isolated heavy rainfall from June 9 to 11, while Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may experience the same on June 9 and 10.
These detailed weather forecasts provide valuable information to the residents and authorities of the affected regions, enabling them to take necessary precautions and make appropriate arrangements to mitigate the potential risks associated with Cyclone Biparjoy. It is essential for individuals and communities to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins and follow the instructions and guidelines issued by the meteorological department and local authorities to ensure their safety and well-being during such weather events.
