The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that Rs 2000 denomination banknotes will be withdrawn from circulation as part of its “Clean Note Policy.” However, these notes will still be considered legal tender. According to the RBI, individuals can deposit Rs 2000 banknotes into their bank accounts or exchange them for other denominations at any bank branch.
Starting from May 23, 2023, people can exchange Rs 2000 banknotes for other denominations up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time, ensuring convenience and uninterrupted banking activities. The exchange facility will be available until September 30, 2023, and separate guidelines have been issued to banks.
To exchange your Rs 2000 notes, follow these steps:
- Visit a nearby bank branch and check their working hours and availability of exchange services.
- Carry valid identification proof, such as an Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, or driver’s license, along with your bank account details.
- Approach the Exchange Counter or inquire with the bank staff about the designated area for exchanging Rs 2000 notes.
- Present your identification document(s) and provide your bank account details as requested by the bank personnel.
- After verifying the authenticity of the notes, the bank will provide you with lower denomination banknotes, such as Rs 500, Rs 200, Rs 100, etc., based on availability.
- The RBI has allowed banks to exchange Rs 2000 banknotes up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time to ensure operational convenience.
- Business Correspondents (BCs) can also exchange Rs 2000 banknotes up to a limit of Rs 4000 per day for an account holder, subject to the bank’s discretion.
- The usual limits will apply when crediting the value of Rs 2000 notes to Jan Dhan Yojana Accounts/Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) Accounts.
- Banks are encouraged to make special arrangements to minimize inconvenience for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and women seeking to exchange/deposit Rs 2000 notes.
- Banks may consider using mobile vans to provide deposit/exchange facilities to people residing in remote or unbanked areas.
The RBI’s withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes aims to promote a cleaner note circulation system. Remember to complete the exchange process before September 30, 2023, if you have Rs 2000 notes that need to be exchanged.
