India has reported a sharp decline in daily Covid cases, with only 1,331 new infections recorded on Tuesday, according to the Union Health Ministry. Active cases have also dropped to 22,742 from 25,178. However, the death toll has climbed to 5,31,707 with 11 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours. The country’s COVID-19 tally now stands at 4.49 crore (4,49,72,800), with a case fatality rate of 1.18 percent.
The number of people who have recovered from the disease has surged to 4,44,18,351, and the active cases comprise only 0.06 percent of the total infections. The national COVID-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.76 percent.
The city government’s health department reported 37 fresh Covid cases in Delhi on Monday with a positivity rate of 3.89 percent and two Covid-linked deaths, taking the total cases to 20,40,152 and the death toll to 26,646. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has accepted the recommendation of the emergency committee to declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern due to the pandemic, which has been on a downward trend for over a year.
However, he also acknowledged that thousands of people around the world are still fighting for their lives in intensive care units and millions more continue to live with post-Covid conditions.
