Air India’s landmark deal with Airbus is set to create jobs and boost UK exports, according to UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak. The £1.2bn deal will see Air India purchase 56 Airbus A320neo planes, with the first delivery expected in 2022.

The deal is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it represents a major investment by Air India, which is owned by the Indian government, in modernising its fleet. The A320neo is a highly efficient and environmentally-friendly aircraft, and its introduction to Air India’s fleet will enable the airline to reduce its operating costs and improve its overall performance.

Secondly, the deal is a significant boost for the UK’s aerospace industry. Airbus is a major employer in the UK, with around 13,500 people working for the company across its sites in Bristol, Broughton, and Filton. The production of the A320neo will generate significant revenue for the UK economy, and will support highly skilled jobs in the manufacturing and engineering sectors.

In a statement, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: “This landmark deal between Air India and Airbus is great news for the UK economy, and for our aerospace industry in particular. The A320neo is one of the most efficient and environmentally-friendly aircraft in the world, and its purchase by Air India will help to drive down the airline’s operating costs, while also supporting highly skilled jobs in the UK.”

He added: “This deal is a further demonstration of the close economic ties between the UK and India, and of the huge potential for collaboration and partnership between our two countries. I look forward to seeing the benefits of this deal for both Air India and the UK economy in the years ahead.”

The deal comes at a time when the UK is seeking to strengthen its trade and investment ties with India. The two countries have a long history of economic and cultural ties, and the UK is one of India’s largest trading partners.

The UK government has been actively seeking to promote investment in the country, and has introduced a range of measures to support businesses and encourage growth. The Air India-Airbus deal is a clear example of the success of these efforts, and highlights the potential for further collaboration and partnership between the UK and India.

In conclusion, the Air India-Airbus deal is a significant milestone for both Air India and the UK’s aerospace industry. The purchase of the A320neo will enable Air India to modernise its fleet, while generating significant revenue for the UK economy and supporting highly skilled jobs in the manufacturing and engineering sectors. The deal is a clear demonstration of the close economic ties between the UK and India, and highlights the potential for further collaboration and partnership in the years ahead.
