Arunachal Pradesh New Lizard Species Discovered by Indian Researchers

A joint team from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and Gauhati University made the discovery during a biodiversity survey. The two species — Cyrtodactylus arunachalensis and Hemiphyllodactylus unakotiensis — were spotted in remote forest regions near the border.

Lead researcher Dr. R. K. Sharma said the discovery shows how much remains unexplored in Northeast India. His team worked with local guides to locate these small reptiles in remote mountain zones.

Biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh Gets a Fresh Boost

Arunachal Pradesh already enjoys global recognition for its biodiversity. Over the past decade, researchers have recorded more than 20 new species of animals and plants.
Because of this, scientists call it India’s “natural laboratory” for studying evolution and climate adaptation.

The discovery of these new lizard species adds to the list of unique creatures native to India’s Northeast. Researchers say such findings strengthen the call for long-term conservation of forest habitats.

Scientific Value of the Arunachal Pradesh Discovery

Scientists confirmed the lizards’ uniqueness through DNA analysis and detailed field observations. Both species differ in body structure, color pattern, and behavior compared to other known species in India.

“This discovery emphasizes the need to protect fragile ecosystems before they disappear,” Dr. Sharma noted. His team plans to recommend that the new species be added to India’s biodiversity records and the IUCN Red List.

Local Communities Support the Search for New Species

Local tribal communities played a key role in this Arunachal Pradesh new lizard species discovery. They guided researchers through dense jungles and shared insights about wildlife behavior.

Community-based conservation has become a key part of biodiversity work in Arunachal Pradesh. Many scientists believe combining traditional knowledge with modern science can yield better protection for rare species.

Conservation Challenges in Arunachal Pradesh

While the discovery is promising, environmental experts warn that habitat loss remains a major threat. Expanding settlements and logging in certain areas are reducing forest cover.

The researchers have urged the government to step up awareness campaigns and support eco-tourism as a sustainable income source. Protecting the habitat of the new lizard species could help preserve many other lesser-known species too.

India’s Northeast — A Hub of Reptile Diversity

Arunachal Pradesh and its neighboring states form part of the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. This region is home to several rare snakes, geckos, and amphibians. Each new discovery reinforces how crucial the Northeast is to India’s wildlife map.

Projects under India’s National Biodiversity Mission aim to document such species and train young scientists for long-term research.

Protect Arunachal’s Forests

The discovery of the Arunachal Pradesh new lizard species reminds us that the natural world still holds secrets waiting to be uncovered. Experts urge both citizens and policymakers to support conservation programs and report wildlife sightings responsibly.
