Assam Chief Minister Replaces “India” with “Bharat” in Twitter Bio, Takes a Dig at Opposition Coalition

In a move that has stirred political debate, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently altered his Twitter bio from “Chief Minister of Assam, India” to “Chief Minister of Assam, BHARAT.” The change was seen as a veiled dig at the opposition coalition, which had adopted the name INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) during a meeting in Bengaluru on July 18.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had previously been associated with the Indian National Congress, clarified the reason behind the change in his Twitter bio. He asserted that the modification reflected his political journey from the Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He further emphasized that he had inadvertently forgotten to update his bio after switching parties. Through his tweet, he aimed to emphasize his allegiance to the BJP and his identity as a representative of Assam, a state within the country referred to as “Bharat” in the Indian constitution.

The change in Sarma’s Twitter bio immediately caught the attention of political circles and sparked mixed reactions. Some saw it as a mere symbolic gesture, while others viewed it as a calculated move to take a swipe at the opposition coalition, whose acronym coincidentally shares the name “India.” The move was interpreted by some as an attempt to assert his allegiance to the BJP and differentiate himself from his previous association with the Congress party.

In response to the change, some members of the Congress party questioned Sarma’s motivations. They raised concerns about the use of such a sensitive matter as the country’s name in a political context, and accused him of indulging in petty politics. However, supporters of the Chief Minister argued that the alteration was a legitimate expression of his political journey and identity, and should not be misconstrued as an attempt to belittle the opposition coalition.

The opposition coalition, INDIA, was formed with the aim of uniting like-minded political parties and creating a formidable force to challenge the ruling BJP in upcoming elections. The coalition’s name, which stands for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, was selected to reflect its commitment to the development and inclusivity of all Indian states.

Political analysts have noted that such symbolic gestures in the digital realm have become increasingly common in contemporary politics. Social media platforms, especially Twitter, have become battlegrounds for political messaging, and leaders often use these platforms to convey their ideological stances and political affiliations.

It remains to be seen how this seemingly minor change in Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Twitter bio will impact the political landscape in Assam and beyond. As the state gears up for future elections, political maneuvering and rhetoric are expected to intensify. Amidst this backdrop, the Chief Minister’s decision to change his bio has provided a talking point for political commentators and the public alike.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s decision to replace “India” with “Bharat” in his Twitter bio has drawn attention and reactions from various quarters. While some see it as a reflection of his political journey from the Congress to the BJP, others perceive it as a subtle dig at the opposition coalition, which shares the same acronym “INDIA.” The change highlights the growing significance of social media platforms in shaping political narratives and underscores the deeply entrenched political divisions in the country. As politics continues to evolve, such symbolic gestures are likely to remain a part of the political landscape.
