In a major crackdown on digital extremism, Assam Police arrested 15 individuals across several districts for allegedly posting online content that glorified the recent Delhi blast. The coordinated operation underscores the state’s resolve to curb terror-linked propaganda and safeguard communal harmony.

The Assam online terror arrests took place in Bongaigaon, Hailakandi, Lakhimpur, Barpeta, Hojai, Kamrup, and South Salmara. Police said the suspects had uploaded celebratory posts that appeared to justify the Delhi explosion.

Crackdown Across Seven Districts

Assam’s Director General of Police, G. P. Singh, confirmed the arrests on social media, calling it a “zero-tolerance approach to glorification of terrorism.”

The Assam online terror arrests followed a week-long surveillance operation led by the Cyber Crime Unit. According to reports from NDTV, state police tracked numerous Facebook and X accounts that posted celebratory messages after the blast near Delhi’s Red Fort area.

Police sources said that the arrested individuals come from diverse backgrounds, including students, small traders, and daily wage earners. Each suspect was detained under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Information Technology Act.

Strong Message Against Digital Radicalisation

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the swift police action, stating that “social media cannot become a breeding ground for those who glorify violence or spread hatred.”

He warned that “those who promote terrorism online will face severe legal action.”

This marks one of the largest cyber operations in Assam in recent months. According to The Economic Times, around 34 more individuals have been identified for sharing similar content and are under investigation.

The state’s Home Department said the arrests were necessary to “protect digital space from misuse and maintain inter-community peace.”

What Triggered the Delhi Blast-Linked Arrests

The Delhi blast, which occurred earlier this month near a high-security zone, prompted nationwide outrage and a surge in online chatter. However, authorities discovered a disturbing trend—several accounts from Assam had shared messages that glorified the act.

In response, a cyber monitoring team flagged and verified the posts. The Assam online terror arrests were made within 48 hours of verification.

Officials say this rapid response demonstrates the improved coordination between district cyber police units and the central intelligence network.

Assam Online Terror Arrests: Legal & Social Impact

Legal experts note that the arrests send a strong message to social media users who misuse platforms. Posting content that glorifies or justifies violence, even indirectly, can attract severe penalties under Indian law.

Law enforcement authorities clarified that freedom of speech does not extend to supporting acts of terror.

Cybercrime specialists believe the arrests will serve as a deterrent for online radicalisation attempts, particularly among youth who might unknowingly share extremist content.

The incident also highlights the state’s broader goal of maintaining peace and unity in a region that has historically faced challenges from insurgent activities.

Awareness Drives and Digital Vigilance

In light of the Assam online terror arrests, the state government has announced upcoming digital awareness campaigns in schools and colleges. These programs will educate young users on responsible social media behaviour and legal boundaries of online speech.

Additionally, cyber units across all districts will receive advanced monitoring tools and training to track suspicious online activities more efficiently.

The Assam Police have urged citizens to report any content that promotes violence or hate through the Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) or via their official portal.

Public Response

The crackdown has drawn mixed reactions online. Many praised the police for acting decisively, while others urged caution to ensure due process and avoid wrongful detention.

Social activists emphasized the need for digital literacy alongside law enforcement. “People must understand what crosses the line from opinion to criminal speech,” said a representative from the Assam Human Rights Forum.

Despite differing opinions, there’s broad agreement that such arrests reflect the growing importance of cyber law enforcement in the digital era.

The Road Ahead

Experts suggest that the next step for Assam is to balance enforcement with education. Preventing digital radicalisation requires not just arrests but also awareness and rehabilitation programs.

The Assam online terror arrests have become a national case study on how local police can effectively address online extremism through coordinated action and legal precision.

Assam’s latest crackdown shows that digital accountability is now central to national security. Citizens must act responsibly online—report suspicious content, avoid sharing unverified information, and help preserve peace. Together, we can ensure that Assam remains safe, informed, and united.
