The Delhi government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has plans to introduce 100 “mohalla” (neighbourhood) buses in the national capital soon. The move aims to improve last-mile connectivity, especially in areas with narrow and crowded roads and poorly connected residential as well as commercial hubs. To this end, the Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot has directed the department to constitute a committee to conduct a study of routes for the service.Last-mile connectivity is an essential aspect of public transportation that addresses the challenges commuters face in accessing their final destinations after getting off from buses, metros, or other modes of public transport. In many cities, last-mile connectivity is a problem due to the lack of feeder services or inadequate infrastructure. Mohalla buses aim to bridge this gap by providing convenient, affordable, and reliable transport services for people residing in congested neighbourhoods. The proposed service will cater to areas that are not covered by existing bus routes or are not served by other modes of transport. The mohalla buses will operate on routes that are specific to the locality and will make stops at frequent intervals. This will enable people to access their workplaces, markets, schools, and other essential services easily. The service is expected to benefit a large number of people, including women, students, senior citizens, and low-income groups. The transport minister’s directive to constitute a committee to study the routes for the service is a step in the right direction. The committee will examine the feasibility of the routes, taking into account the traffic density, road width, and other factors that may impact the service’s efficiency. It will also identify the locations for the bus stops and terminals, keeping in mind the convenience of the passengers. The mohalla bus service is part of the Delhi government’s larger plan to improve public transport in the city. The government has already introduced several measures such as the free bus ride scheme for women and the installation of CCTV cameras in buses to ensure the safety and security of passengers. The mohalla buses will complement these measures and provide a much-needed boost to the city’s public transport system. The service will also have a positive impact on the environment by reducing the number of private vehicles on the roads. This, in turn, will help to reduce air pollution and congestion, which are major problems in Delhi. Mohalla buses will encourage people to switch to public transport and reduce their reliance on private vehicles, which will have a positive impact on the city’s overall transportation ecosystem. The introduction of the mohalla bus service is a significant development for Delhi’s public transport system. The service will not only improve last-mile connectivity but also provide a much-needed boost to the city’s public transport infrastructure. The committee’s study of the routes will ensure that the service is efficient and effective, and benefits the maximum number of people. With the introduction of the mohalla bus service, the Delhi government is taking a step towards providing affordable, safe, and convenient transport for all.
