The incident reportedly took place on February 20 following a dispute over repair work at the rented accommodation where the women were staying. According to police officials, the argument escalated, and Jain allegedly directed racially offensive comments at the women during the confrontation.

FIR Registered Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita

Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) at Malviya Nagar Police Station soon after receiving the complaint. Authorities booked Jain under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to criminal intimidation, insulting the modesty of women, and promoting enmity between different groups.

Investigators began collecting evidence, including video recordings and statements from witnesses present at the scene. Officials said the footage and testimonies confirmed that racially charged language was used during the altercation.

SC/ST Act Invoked After Evidence Review

After reviewing the material evidence, Delhi Police invoked provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Officials said the application of the Act followed confirmation that the alleged remarks targeted the victims’ ethnic identity.

The SC/ST Act provides stringent legal safeguards against atrocities and discrimination faced by members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Police stated that they applied the Act to ensure a thorough and fair investigation.

Probe Under Senior Supervision

Authorities have assigned the investigation to an officer of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) rank. Senior officials are closely supervising the case due to its sensitive nature.

Police are also examining the alleged involvement of a male co-accused named in the FIR. Investigators are verifying his role in the incident and determining whether he participated in or supported the alleged abuse.

Growing Concerns Over Racial Discrimination

The case has once again highlighted concerns over racial discrimination faced by people from Northeast India in metropolitan cities. Civil society groups have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement of anti-discrimination laws and greater public awareness to prevent such incidents.

Delhi Police assured that they will take strict action in accordance with the law. Officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining communal harmony and protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to question additional witnesses in the coming days.
