Senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi is likely to contest the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections 2026 from the Jorhat constituency, according to party sources. The development comes as the Indian National Congress moves closer to releasing its first list of candidates.
Sources indicated that nearly 40 candidates were finalised during a meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee held on Thursday evening. However, the official announcement is expected only after the Election Commission declares the poll schedule.
Gogoi, who currently serves as president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has been actively engaged in seat-sharing and alliance discussions ahead of the crucial state polls. His possible candidature from Jorhat is being viewed as a strategic move, given his political influence in Upper Assam.

Alliance Talks Nearing Conclusion
Earlier this week, Gogoi had stated that discussions with several opposition parties were nearing completion. However, he noted that talks with Raijor Dal were still ongoing. He expressed confidence that formal announcements regarding alliances would be made soon after negotiations are concluded.
According to a release issued by the APCC, Gogoi recently visited New Delhi to brief the party’s central leadership on the progress of alliance talks. He reportedly submitted detailed reports outlining developments and pending issues. The party high command is expected to provide further direction after reviewing these updates.
Political observers believe that alliance-building will play a decisive role in the 2026 Assembly elections. The Congress is aiming to consolidate opposition forces to mount a strong challenge in the state.
Election Preparations Underway
Meanwhile, preparations for the Assam Assembly elections are gaining momentum. The polls are scheduled to be held in the first half of 2026. In this context, the Election Commission of India has begun reviewing logistical and administrative readiness.
Earlier this month, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, conducted a two-day visit to Guwahati to assess poll preparedness. The delegation reviewed security arrangements, electoral roll updates, and coordination mechanisms with state officials.
Additionally, the Commission held meetings with representatives of national and regional political parties. During these interactions, party leaders shared suggestions and concerns regarding election arrangements and the smooth conduct of polling.
Political Significance
The Jorhat constituency holds political importance in Upper Assam, and Gogoi’s likely candidature could energise the Congress cadre in the region. As APCC chief, his presence in the electoral fray is expected to boost the party’s campaign efforts statewide.
With candidate finalisation underway and alliance negotiations nearing completion, the Congress appears to be accelerating its preparations. The announcement of the first list of candidates is likely to set the tone for the party’s campaign strategy.
As the state moves closer to the 2026 Assembly elections, political activity across Assam is intensifying. All eyes are now on the Election Commission’s announcement of the poll schedule, which will formally kick off the high-stakes electoral battle.
