The Karnataka government has taken a significant step towards women empowerment by announcing the implementation of the ‘Shakti’ scheme, which allows women to avail free travel in state-run buses. The scheme, which will be effective from June 11, comes with certain conditions, including the reservation of 50 percent of seats for men. This initiative fulfills one of the promises made by the Congress party in its election manifesto, highlighting the importance of women’s welfare.

In a move aimed at providing convenient and affordable transportation options for women, the Karnataka government’s decision to introduce the ‘Shakti’ scheme is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of women residing in the state. With the implementation of this scheme, women will be able to travel on state-run buses free of charge, enabling them to commute more easily and independently.

The Congress party, in its election manifesto, had pledged to offer free rides for women in government buses, emphasizing the significance of this initiative for women’s safety and empowerment. As promised, the ‘Shakti’ scheme will come into effect as soon as the Congress party assumes power in Karnataka.

Under the scheme, in addition to women, transgender individuals will also be eligible to avail the benefits of free bus travel. This inclusion reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring inclusivity and equal rights for all citizens, regardless of gender identity.

To be eligible for the ‘Shakti’ scheme, beneficiaries must be domiciled in Karnataka. This requirement ensures that the scheme primarily benefits women and transgender individuals who are permanent residents of the state. By focusing on residents, the government aims to prioritize the needs of the local population and provide them with accessible transportation options.

While the ‘Shakti’ scheme offers numerous advantages for women and transgender individuals, it also emphasizes the importance of gender equality by reserving 50 percent of the seats for men. This decision promotes inclusivity and ensures that men are not left behind in accessing the benefits of the scheme.

The introduction of the ‘Shakti’ scheme is a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to empower women and create a safer environment for them. By offering free bus travel, the scheme enables women to overcome transportation challenges and enhances their ability to participate in various economic, educational, and social activities.

The implementation of this scheme is expected to have a positive impact on women’s lives, allowing them to save money on transportation expenses and invest it in other areas that contribute to their overall well-being. Additionally, the availability of safe and reliable transportation options can significantly improve women’s access to employment opportunities, education, healthcare, and recreational activities.

The ‘Shakti’ scheme reflects the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in Karnataka. By prioritizing women’s needs and providing them with free bus travel, the government sends a strong message that women’s safety, mobility, and empowerment are essential for the overall progress and development of the state.

As the ‘Shakti’ scheme becomes operational from June 11, women and transgender individuals in Karnataka eagerly anticipate the benefits it will bring. The scheme’s implementation marks a significant step towards building an inclusive society where women can enjoy equal opportunities and contribute to the state’s growth and development without hindrances.
