Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has formed a three-member fact-finding committee to investigate the causes of violence in Manipur. The committee includes MP Mukul Wasnik, Ajay Kumar, and Sudip Roy Barman.
The committee will work in coordination with the AICC charge, the PCC President, and the CLP Leader. Their findings are expected to be submitted to Kharge promptly. The violence in Manipur has resulted in the deaths of over 50 people in clashes between tribal and Meiti communities.
The government has extended the suspension of internet services until May 20. The Supreme Court has expressed its commitment to ensuring the state government takes appropriate action regarding law and order in Manipur and has asked for a fresh status report on security measures and relief efforts. The court has decided not to address the legal aspects of the Manipur High Court’s decision on a reservation, as related pleas are pending in a larger division bench.
Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, leading a bench, has decided not to address the legal matters arising from the Manipur High Court’s ruling regarding reservation for the majority Meitei community. This decision was made because there are ongoing pleas challenging the order before a larger division bench in the Manipur High Court.
