Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Tuesday inaugurated the Lengtekai Bridge, officially named “Faith Bridge,” over the Tlawng River in Aizawl district. The project was funded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways at a cost of ₹43.83 crore.
The new bridge replaces older Bailey bridges that had limited load capacity and were frequently damaged. As a result, commuters often faced traffic restrictions and vehicle unloading requirements. The Faith Bridge now ensures uninterrupted and safer transportation.

Modern Design With High Load Capacity
The 100-metre-long bridge has a width of 7.5 metres and includes 1.5-metre footpaths on both sides. It is designed to carry loads of up to 385 metric tonnes.
Unlike the previous temporary structures, the new bridge eliminates load limits. Therefore, heavy vehicles can now pass without restrictions. This upgrade significantly improves road safety and travel efficiency.
Overcoming Technical Challenges
While addressing the inauguration ceremony, Lalduhoma recalled the technical challenges faced during the bridge launching in December 2024. A pulley failure during the launching process caused delays.
However, engineers resumed preparations and successfully completed the launching in April 2025. Subsequently, finishing works, including approach roads, were completed in September 2025. These efforts paved the way for the formal inauguration.
The Chief Minister praised the engineers and workers for overcoming obstacles and completing the project with strict quality standards.
Strategic Importance for Mamit District
Lalduhoma highlighted the bridge’s strategic value for Mamit district, which has a population of around 85,000 across nearly 90 villages, according to Census 2011 data.
He noted that the district holds significant agricultural potential. In particular, rubber cultivation has expanded under the state’s Chief Minister Rubber Mission.
Moreover, the route strengthens connectivity between Mizoram and neighbouring Tripura and Bangladesh. It also facilitates the transport of Langkaih river sand and improves access to Lengpui Airport and the National Institute of Technology Mizoram.
Furthermore, the Mamit–Bairabi corridor is expected to gain prominence as regional connectivity expands.

Addressing Infrastructure Gaps
The Chief Minister pointed out that Mizoram’s road density stands at about 46.37 km per 100 sq km. This figure remains below the national average. Therefore, accelerating infrastructure development remains a key priority for the state government.
He also acknowledged the support of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the central government for their cooperation in executing the project.
Strict Quality and Safety Measures
The bridge was constructed by Poddar Infra Tech. Design consultancy was provided by Force Structural Engineering Pvt. Ltd., while proof consultancy was undertaken by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Engineering Project Consultants handled safety oversight.
Officials stated that strict quality assurance protocols were followed during construction. An on-site laboratory regularly tested aggregates and sand, including materials sourced from Assam.
Steel components were fabricated in Rourkela and transported in sections for assembly. Additionally, specialized carbon steel tension rods for the hanger system were manufactured in Thailand.
After completion, authorities conducted comprehensive load testing to confirm operational safety. The tests verified that the bridge can handle all classes of vehicles.
Boost to Regional Connectivity
Overall, the Faith Bridge marks a major infrastructure milestone for Mizoram. It strengthens road connectivity, supports agricultural and commercial transport, and enhances regional integration.
With improved access and higher load capacity, the bridge is expected to boost economic activity and ensure smoother travel for residents and businesses alike.
