The Mizoram Legislative Assembly will discuss a key resolution on Monday. The proposal seeks to include the Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Assembly officials confirmed that the discussion will take place during the ongoing session.

School Education Minister Vanlalthlana will move the resolution after the question hour. The government hopes to secure national recognition for Mizo through this initiative.

The Eighth Schedule currently lists 22 officially recognised languages. Inclusion in the list would give Mizo greater constitutional status and support.

Push for National Recognition

The state government believes that constitutional recognition will strengthen the language. It will also promote its use in education, administration, and research.

Inclusion in the Eighth Schedule can bring several benefits. It can support the development of literature and academic work in Mizo. It can also encourage its use in national-level examinations and government programs.

Leaders in Mizoram say the move will protect the language and promote cultural identity.

Consultations with Language Experts

The proposal follows discussions between Chief Minister Lalduhoma and the Eighth Schedule Study Group of the Mizo Language Development Board (MLDB).

The study group reviewed the demand and examined public opinion across the state. In January, the group submitted its findings to the government.

The report highlighted strong support from civil society groups and language organisations. Many ethnic Mizo communities also backed the demand.

The group suggested that the government renew efforts with the Centre. It also recommended forming a task force to prepare a stronger proposal.

Earlier Proposal and New Strategy

The report noted that the state had earlier sent a proposal to the Central government. However, the initiative did not move forward at the time.

Experts believe a fresh and detailed submission could strengthen the case. A new task force may help gather documentation and build wider support.

The state government now wants to revive the demand with better preparation.

Importance of the Mizo Language

Mizo has served as the official language of Mizoram since 1974. People use it widely in administration, education, and media.

The language also connects Zo ethnic communities beyond Mizoram. Many Zo groups live in neighbouring states and across borders in Myanmar and Bangladesh.

For these communities, Mizo plays a key role in preserving cultural identity and heritage.

What Happens Next

The Assembly debate will mark an important step in the process. If lawmakers pass the resolution, the state government will send the proposal to the Centre.

Language activists and cultural organisations have welcomed the move. Many believe constitutional recognition will strengthen the future of the Mizo language.

The outcome of the debate will show how strongly the state stands behind this long-standing demand.
