Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), has strongly condemned the alleged racial harassment of three women from Arunachal Pradesh in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. Calling the incident “profoundly shameful,” he said discrimination against citizens from the Northeast will not be tolerated.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage after a video of the confrontation surfaced on social media.

Dispute Escalates Over Minor Residential Work
The altercation reportedly took place on the afternoon of February 20 at a residential complex in Malviya Nagar. According to the police complaint, the three women were carrying out minor electrical and drilling work in their fourth-floor rented apartment.
Dust and debris from the drilling allegedly fell into the flat below, prompting a complaint from neighbours identified as Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain. What began as a disagreement over maintenance issues soon escalated.
The victims alleged that the confrontation turned hostile and included verbal intimidation and racial slurs. A video clip of the exchange quickly went viral online, drawing sharp criticism and renewed focus on the challenges faced by people from the Northeastern states living in the national capital.
Minister Seeks Swift and Strict Action
Reacting to the incident, Scindia posted on social media platform X that a minor civic dispute turning into abuse rooted in prejudice is unacceptable. He emphasised that every Indian citizen deserves dignity and safety, regardless of their regional background.
The Minister confirmed that he personally spoke with Pema Khandu and the Delhi Police Commissioner. He urged authorities to treat the matter with urgency and ensure that strict action is taken against those responsible.
Scindia stated that such “injustice” must face the full force of the law. He reiterated the Centre’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of people from the Northeast.
FIR Registered Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
The Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) at the Malviya Nagar Police Station. Authorities invoked relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The charges reportedly include provisions related to outraging the modesty of a woman and promoting enmity on grounds of religion or race. Police have begun an investigation and are reviewing video evidence circulating online.
Officials have assured that they will follow due process and take appropriate legal action based on the findings.
Renewed Focus on Discrimination Concerns
The incident has reignited debate over racial discrimination faced by individuals from Northeastern states in metropolitan cities. Advocacy groups and civil society organisations have repeatedly highlighted instances of bias and stereotyping.
Community leaders have called for stricter enforcement of laws against hate speech and harassment. They have also urged greater public awareness to promote inclusivity and respect.
Meanwhile, political leaders across party lines have condemned the alleged harassment and demanded accountability. Many have stressed that such incidents damage the spirit of unity and diversity that defines the nation.
Government Reaffirms Zero Tolerance
The Union government has maintained that acts of racial discrimination will not go unpunished. Scindia’s intervention underscores the Centre’s intent to ensure swift justice and reinforce protections for Northeastern citizens residing outside their home states.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to examine statements from all parties involved and assess digital evidence. The outcome of the case will likely remain under close public scrutiny.
For now, the incident serves as a reminder of the need for stronger safeguards and continued dialogue to address prejudice and ensure equal treatment for all citizens.
