Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sushmita Dev on Sunday, September 14, launched a strong attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. She accused him of being confused and failing to handle multiple revolts emerging in the state. Dev claimed that Sarma’s contradictory statements on D-Voter identification and Aadhaar card distribution have created uncertainty and mistrust among communities.

The TMC leader alleged that the Chief Minister’s approach is dividing citizens instead of addressing their concerns. She said Assam needs clarity and inclusive leadership rather than mixed messaging that stokes further unrest.

D-Voter Issue Sparks Public Confusion

Dev said that the Chief Minister’s stance on the D-Voter issue reflects a lack of clear policy. She criticized Sarma for making conflicting statements, which has left affected families uncertain about their future.

D-Voters, or doubtful voters, are those whose citizenship is under question in Assam. The issue has long been sensitive, as it directly impacts the rights and security of thousands of residents. Dev stated that instead of offering a definitive solution, the government has fueled anxiety.

She added that the lack of transparency is deepening distrust among minority and tribal communities. TMC, she said, would continue to push for policies that safeguard every citizen’s rights.

Aadhaar Distribution Debate Intensifies

The TMC MP also criticized the government’s handling of Aadhaar card distribution. She said that while Aadhaar should provide a uniform identification system, the implementation in Assam has been riddled with inconsistencies.

Dev claimed that the BJP-led administration has failed to ensure a smooth process. Many citizens, especially those from marginalized groups, are reportedly facing hurdles in getting their Aadhaar cards, leading to exclusion from welfare schemes.

She alleged that the government is using Aadhaar as a political tool rather than a citizen service. The confusion over Aadhaar distribution, she said, is worsening the feeling of neglect among Assam’s rural and minority populations.

Allegations of Mishandling Statewide Unrest

According to Dev, Assam is currently witnessing unrest on multiple fronts, including issues of identity, land rights, and citizenship verification. She accused the Chief Minister of struggling to provide effective leadership at a time when the state needs stability.

Dev said that the people of Assam are paying the price for what she called “politics of division.” She warned that unless the government takes immediate corrective measures, these tensions could escalate further.

The TMC MP also stressed that the state needs leaders who focus on development and harmony rather than polarizing politics. She urged the government to prioritize welfare policies and address grassroots concerns.

Call for a Unified Approach

The TMC leader’s remarks come at a time when Assam is preparing for key political developments and policy decisions. Dev highlighted the need for a unified approach to resolve identity and documentation issues.

She said the government must stop making contradictory statements and instead release clear guidelines on citizenship verification, D-Voter cases, and Aadhaar services. This, she argued, would help rebuild public trust and prevent further unrest.

TMC has been increasingly vocal about the situation in Assam, positioning itself as a strong opposition force in the state. Dev’s statements are likely to intensify the political discourse as parties prepare for upcoming elections.

A Growing Political Battle in Assam

Assam has become a key battleground for regional and national parties, with citizenship and documentation issues dominating the political landscape. The BJP, which leads the state government, has often highlighted its development agenda, while opposition parties like TMC and Congress have accused it of neglecting sensitive social issues.

Dev’s remarks are expected to add momentum to TMC’s efforts to expand its presence in Assam. By targeting the Chief Minister directly, she has signaled that the party intends to challenge BJP’s dominance.

As political tensions rise, citizens remain concerned about policy clarity, access to government services, and communal harmony. Dev’s comments underscore the growing need for solutions that balance governance, identity, and inclusivity.
