  • State: Sikkim
  • Affected Districts: Pakyong, Gangtok, and Mangan
  • Transmission Lines: Multiple 66 kV lines damaged
  • Major Impact: Power outages in several towns and villages
  • Action Taken: Emergency repair and inspection by power department

Transmission Line Damage in Pakyong District

The power department reported a major fault in Pakyong District during the storm.

A conductor on the 66 kV Rorathang–Rongli transmission line snapped near Amba. As a result, electricity supply to Rongli and Rhenock stopped.

Officials said strong winds and lightning likely damaged the transmission line.

Repair teams quickly reached the site to assess the situation and begin restoration work.

Power Disruptions in Gangtok District

Meanwhile, several areas in Gangtok District also faced electricity disruptions.

Residents reported loud noises and sparks near Namli on the 66 kV Marchak–Macleods line.

The incident interrupted power supply to areas including Nimtar, Topakhani, Singtam and Khamdong.

In addition, the 66 kV LLHP–Sichey line failed during trial charging. Officials said engineers are inspecting the line to identify the exact cause of the fault.

Blackout Reported in Mangan District

The thunderstorm also affected northern parts of the state.

Heavy sparks appeared near the G B Pant Wildlife Sanctuary along the 66 kV Perbing–Phodong transmission line.

As a result, several areas in Mangan District experienced a complete blackout.

Officials said the sparks indicated possible technical damage caused by the storm.

Power Department Begins Emergency Repairs

Soon after the incidents, the state power department deployed teams to patrol the affected transmission lines.

Engineers and technicians are currently inspecting damaged infrastructure and carrying out urgent repair work.

Authorities said their priority is to restore power supply as quickly as possible.

However, temporary power outages may continue in some locations until repairs finish.

Location Context: Weather Challenges in the Northeast and Himalayan Region

States like Sikkim frequently experience strong thunderstorms due to their mountainous terrain and changing weather patterns.

Such storms can damage transmission lines and disrupt electricity supply.

Therefore, quick response from power authorities remains essential to restore services and maintain infrastructure reliability.
