In a major counter-insurgency operation, security forces arrested two active members of the banned People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and recovered a cache of sophisticated arms and explosives. The coordinated operations were carried out across Imphal East district and Imphal West district on February 17, 2026.
Officials said the arrests highlight continued efforts by security agencies to dismantle insurgent networks operating in sensitive areas of the state.

PLA Member Arrested in Imphal East
According to official sources, security forces apprehended a self-styled private of the PLA’s RPF wing during an operation in Sawombung under Lamlai Police Station.
The accused has been identified as Athokpam Manaoton Meitei alias Tamanao alias Malem alias Amujao (42). He is a resident of Chana Mayai Leikai in Imphal East district.
Authorities confirmed that he was actively associated with the banned outfit. The arrest followed specific intelligence inputs about insurgent movements in the area.
Self-Styled Lieutenant Nabbed
In a separate operation on the same day, security personnel arrested another active PLA member from Yaingangpokpi Bazar under Yaingangpokpi Police Station in Imphal East district.
The accused, identified as Ningthoujam Ibungocha alias Sathouba Meitei (38), is described as a self-styled lieutenant of the PLA. Officials stated that he was allegedly involved in extortion activities in the region.
During the arrest, security forces seized a mobile phone along with a SIM card from his possession. Authorities are examining the device for further leads.
Cache of Arms and Explosives Recovered
Meanwhile, security forces recovered a significant cache of weapons and explosives from an area along Ngairangbam Tanoukhul Road towards Longa Koireng under Patsoi Police Station in Imphal West district.
The seized items included one double-barrel gun and one country-made pistol with a magazine. In addition, personnel recovered 181 rounds of ammunition of various calibres and three magazines.
Furthermore, the cache contained two No. 36 hand grenades and one detonator. A Baofeng wireless handset along with a charger was also found at the site.
Officials said the recovery of explosives and communication equipment indicates attempts by insurgent elements to regroup and strengthen operational capabilities.
Intensified Security Measures Across Manipur
Following the operations, security forces intensified search operations and area domination exercises across both hill and valley districts. Authorities focused particularly on fringe and vulnerable zones.
As part of the ongoing security grid, forces established 103 nakas and checkpoints across Manipur. However, no detentions were reported during these routine checks.
Officials emphasized that the crackdown forms part of sustained efforts to maintain law and order in the state. They reiterated that intelligence-based operations will continue to prevent insurgent activities and ensure public safety.
Ongoing Vigilance Against Insurgent Threats
Security agencies stated that coordinated actions between police and central forces have strengthened the counter-insurgency framework in Manipur.
Moreover, they stressed that swift action against extremist groups remains a priority. The recent arrests and arms recovery demonstrate proactive steps to curb unlawful activities.
Authorities have launched further investigations to trace possible links and uncover wider networks associated with the arrested individuals.
With heightened vigilance and continuous operations, security forces aim to prevent destabilisation attempts and safeguard peace across the state.
