Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Delay: Trial-Ready Rakes Sent Back Over Quality Concerns
SHARE

The Vande Bharat Sleeper trial delay has raised fresh questions about the preparedness of India’s next major railway upgrade. Indian Railways sent back the trial-ready sleeper rakes to the manufacturer after identifying several quality concerns that needed immediate attention. Officials said the decision was taken to ensure that the new sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express meets safety and comfort standards before public trials begin.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper was expected to enter the trial phase soon. However, the return of the rakes has pushed the schedule back. This has also affected expectations for the official rollout, which many hoped would begin early next year.

Defects found during inspection

Railway officials discovered multiple issues during a routine inspection. The concerns included finishing problems, alignment issues and interior fittings that did not meet the standards expected from a premium long-distance train. Inspectors flagged these concerns during their first round of checks, leading to the decision to send the rakes back.

The sleeper version of the Vande Bharat is designed for overnight travel. Because of this, the comfort and safety standards must be higher. According to officials, any shortcomings in quality could affect the train’s performance or passenger experience. Therefore, the team insisted that the manufacturer make corrections before the trial run starts.

Manufacturer asked to resolve issues quickly

The rakes were returned to the Integral Coach Factory with a clear message: fix the problems without compromising quality. Engineers have already begun working on improvements, and Railway officials expect the corrected rakes to return soon. The trial timeline will be revised after the upgraded units arrive.

Although the delay has created some disappointment, officials believe that ensuring perfect quality is more important than rushing the process. They said the Vande Bharat Sleeper will operate on long routes, so the design must offer high stability, durability and comfort throughout the journey.

Why the Vande Bharat Sleeper is important

The Vande Bharat Sleeper marks a major expansion of India’s semi-high-speed network. Unlike the chair-car versions currently running, the sleeper variant aims to replace traditional overnight trains on key routes. It will offer better speed, improved interiors and a more modern experience for passengers.

Because of this, the Vande Bharat Sleeper trial delay has drawn large public attention. Many passengers were waiting for the sleeper version, expecting faster travel during nighttime routes. Officials say that once the train enters service, it will transform long-distance travel in the country.

Railway officials prioritise safety and durability

Indian Railways has stated that safety and long-term reliability must come first. Even minor defects in a semi-high-speed train can cause problems during long journeys. Therefore, the inspection team followed strict guidelines while checking the rakes.

The sleeper train will run at higher speeds than traditional trains. As a result, the quality of suspension, fittings, interior panels and mechanical components plays a major role in ensuring a smooth journey. The inspection team will carry out another round of checks once the corrected rakes return.

Interior comfort and design under focus

The sleeper version includes three types of berths: upper, middle and lower. It also features upgraded lighting, modern washrooms, improved air-conditioning and noise-controlled interiors. Because passengers rest overnight, comfort is a top priority.

Inspectors found minor issues related to finishing and alignment inside the compartments. These included loose fittings, uneven paneling and minor vibration problems. Engineers are currently working to fix these issues and improve the overall interior build quality.

Revised timeline expected soon

The original expectation was that the Vande Bharat Sleeper trials would begin before the year-end. However, the delay means a new trial date will be announced later. Officials have not given a fixed timeline yet. They want to wait until the rakes return with all corrections completed.

Despite the delay, railway officials remain confident that the sleeper version will begin trials early next year. They said the improvements will ensure that the final product matches global standards.

Public reaction mixed but hopeful

Passengers have expressed mixed reactions. Some are disappointed because they were looking forward to the new sleeper experience. Others believe that returning the rakes for improvement was the right step. Many people feel that quality should come before deadlines, especially for a premium train like the Vande Bharat Sleeper.

Travel enthusiasts and railway observers say the delay will be worthwhile if it results in a safer and more reliable train.

Conclusion

The Vande Bharat Sleeper trial delay has pushed back the expected timeline for India’s next semi-high-speed upgrade. However, Indian Railways believes that correcting quality issues now will ensure better performance and passenger satisfaction later. Once improvements are completed, the sleeper version is expected to bring a major change to long-distance travel across the country.
