An alleged assault on a woman employee near the entry–exit gate of Digboi Refinery on Friday night has triggered serious concerns about security arrangements and the safety of women working in sensitive industrial zones.
The incident reportedly occurred around 9:40 PM when Momi Das, a contractual employee, was returning home on her scooty after duty. Eyewitnesses claimed that a group of suspected contractual workers, including some drivers, intercepted her along the refinery road. The group allegedly assaulted her near the refinery gate, an area that usually has security deployment.

Home Guards and personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) are generally stationed near the gate. An Army camp also operates about 300 metres from the site. However, authorities have not clarified whether any security personnel intervened during the incident. No official statement had been issued at the time of filing this report.
Medical Examination and Police Action
Hospital sources in Digboi said doctors examined Momi Das around 10:15 PM on Friday. Later, around 11:30 PM, police brought three suspected individuals to the hospital for medical formalities. This move indicated that officers had begun action soon after the complaint.
Family members alleged that authorities allowed the three suspects to return home after medical procedures. As of publication, officials at Digboi Police Station had not confirmed whether they detained or formally arrested the accused.
The victim’s husband lodged an FIR later that night. The complaint formally initiated a criminal investigation into the assault.
Victim’s Background and Allegations
Momi Das lives in central Digboi and hails from Dhemaji district. She has worked as a technician with an AOD ambulance service for nearly four years. Her husband reportedly joined as a reliever two months ago.
Her brother, Abhijit Das, told media persons that his sister had faced workplace pressure before the incident. He alleged that two union leaders repeatedly asked her to ensure that her husband vacated his temporary post to accommodate another candidate.
Authorities have not independently verified these allegations. Investigators are likely to examine these claims as part of the ongoing probe.
Abhijit Das further alleged that a group confronted his sister on Friday evening while she escorted her husband from work. He claimed the group assaulted her and behaved inappropriately. The FIR includes these allegations, and police have begun reviewing them.
Call for High-Level Intervention
Abhijit Das said he plans to submit a formal complaint to the Director General of Police in Guwahati along with a copy of the FIR. He has also sought the intervention of Himanta Biswa Sarma, urging swift action and accountability.
The incident has raised broader questions about safety protocols around industrial installations. Local residents and employees have demanded clarity on security measures at refinery gates, especially during late-night shifts.
Police have assured that they will conduct a fair investigation. They are expected to record statements from witnesses and review CCTV footage from the refinery gate area.
As the probe continues, the case has drawn attention to workplace safety, security preparedness, and the need for stronger safeguards for women employees in high-security zones like Digboi Refinery.
