Curfew Imposed in Affected Villages

District authorities enforced the night curfew in several villages located in the Garo Hills region. Moreover, the decision followed growing protests and concerns from local groups regarding the participation of non-tribal candidates in the council elections.

Consequently, officials restricted movement during nighttime hours to prevent escalation of tensions. Meanwhile, security forces have increased patrols in the affected areas to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.

Significance of GHADC Elections

The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council plays an important role in local governance in the Garo Hills region. Importantly, the council functions under the provisions of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India, which grants autonomy to tribal areas in certain northeastern states.

Therefore, elections to the council carry considerable political and social importance. Additionally, the council has authority over matters related to land, culture, and traditional administration.

Controversy Over Non-Tribal Candidates

The controversy began after reports emerged that some non-tribal candidates had filed nominations for the GHADC polls. As a result, several local organisations and community groups voiced strong objections.

Furthermore, protesters argued that the autonomous council was established primarily to safeguard the rights and interests of tribal communities. Consequently, the issue quickly escalated, prompting authorities to intervene with preventive measures.

Authorities Appeal for Calm

Government officials have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security forces during the curfew period. Meanwhile, preparations for the upcoming council elections continue under strict monitoring by the administration.

Ultimately, authorities hope that the curfew will help maintain peace and ensure that the electoral process proceeds smoothly in the region.
