The results for the UP Nikay Chunav (urban body polls) and Bypolls held in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, and Meghalaya are out. The voting percentage in the first phase of the UP local body elections held on May 4th was 52%, and the final phase on Thursday recorded a voter turnout of 53%. The Bypolls were conducted for two Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, one each in Meghalaya and Odisha, and the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab.
The Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat fell vacant following the death of Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary due to a cardiac arrest during the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra in January. It witnessed a four-cornered electoral battle involving the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The voter turnout in Jalandhar was 50.27%.
The Suar and Chhanbey Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh registered a polling percentage of 41.78% and 39.51%, respectively. The Jharsuguda Assembly segment in Odisha witnessed 68.12% polling, while the Sohiong Assembly seat in Meghalaya recorded a voter turnout of 91.56%.
The State Election Commission (SEC) reported a polling percentage of 38.89% in Varanasi, 35.42% in Lucknow, and 30.32% in Prayagraj. In the first phase of the 2017 urban local body elections, a polling percentage of 52.59% was recorded.
The UP municipal elections were held for various seats of Mayor, Corporator, Nagar Palika Parishad Chairperson, Nagar Palika Parishad Member, Nagar Panchayat Chairperson, and Nagar Panchayat Member. The elections were held for 17 seats of Mayor, 1,420 of Corporator, 199 of Nagar Palika Parishad Chairperson, 5,327 of Nagar Palika Parishad Member, 544 of Nagar Panchayat Chairperson, and 7,178 seats of Nagar Panchayat Member.
