In the highly-anticipated IPL 2023 season opener, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) secured a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, April 2.
RCB’s captain, Faf du Plessis, played aggressive innings, scoring 73 runs off just 45 balls, which helped his team surpass the 50-run mark in just 5.3 overs. His partner, Virat Kohli, was equally impressive with an unbeaten 82 runs off 56 balls. The duo’s impressive partnership led RCB to comfortably chase down MI’s challenging target of 172 runs.
Earlier in the match, MI was put under pressure by RCB’s accurate line and length bowling. MI’s openers struggled to score runs, and eventually, Ishan Kishan was dismissed for just 10 runs off 13 balls. MI’s struggle continued as even Suryakumar Yadav found it difficult to connect well.
MI’s captain, Rohit Sharma, was caught behind by wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik for a struggle-filled one run in 10 balls. Karn Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for RCB, taking 2/32. Topley, Siraj, Akash Deep, Bracewell, and Harshal Patel got one wicket each.
Despite the early setbacks, MI managed to cross the 150-run mark in 19.1 overs, finishing their innings at 171/7. Tilak was the standout performer for MI, scoring an unbeaten 84 runs off just 46 balls, with nine fours and four sixes. Arshad Khan was unbeaten at 15 off 9 balls. The duo put on 48 runs for the eighth wicket, with the last over by Harshal Patel giving away 22 runs.
RCB’s impressive performance with both bat and ball proved to be too much for MI. With this win, RCB has started its IPL 2023 campaign on a positive note, while MI will look to bounce back in its upcoming matches.
