The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rains in Uttarakhand from 11th to 13th June. According to the weather office’s forecast, there is a possibility of rain in some places in the hilly districts of the state on Saturday.
On 11th June, the IMD predicts thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph at isolated places in Uttarakhand. For the predictions on 12th and 13th June, the IMD warns of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail, and squall with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, likely to occur at isolated places in Uttarakhand.
In other weather news, the Southwest monsoon has hit India, making its onset over Kerala, albeit a week later than the normal date of June 1. The monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of the South Arabian Sea and some parts of the Central Arabian Sea, covering the entire Lakshadweep area, most parts of Kerala, most parts of South Tamil Nadu, the remaining parts of the Comorin area, the Gulf of Mannar, and some more parts of Southwest, Central, and Northeast Bay of Bengal.
In Northeast India, the IMD has predicted light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning likely over the region for the next five days. Very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in Assam & Meghalaya on 12th and 13th June. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya during the next five days, and over Manipur & Mizoram on 10th and 12th June.
Moving to South India, the IMD forecasts light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the region for the next five days. Heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Kerala and Coastal Karnataka for the next three days, and over Lakshadweep for the next two days.
In East India, the IMD predicts very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during 11th to 13th June. Isolated heavy rainfall has also been predicted over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands during 9th to 11th June, and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on 9th and 10th June.
