The South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India, has recently announced its plans to develop the closed Manikpur Pokhri open-cast coal mine in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district into an eco-tourism spot. This decision comes after the successful transformation of a similar mine in the neighboring Surajpur district into a tourist attraction. The SECL, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation Korba, has allocated over Rs 11 crores for the development of the Manikpur Pokhari mine, with an initial release of Rs 5.60 crore to the Korba Collector for this purpose.

The initiative to convert the Manikpur Pokhri mine into an eco-tourism destination demonstrates the SECL’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its desire to repurpose closed coal mines for the benefit of the local community. By leveraging the natural beauty and unique features of the mine site, SECL aims to create a tourism hotspot that will attract visitors and boost the region’s economy.

SECL spokesperson Sanish Chandra emphasized the significance of this venture, stating, “The development of Manikpur Pokhari mine as an eco-tourism spot will not only promote environmental conservation but also generate employment opportunities for the local population.” This project aligns with the growing global trend of repurposing abandoned industrial sites into recreational and cultural hubs, offering visitors a chance to explore the history and natural surroundings while preserving the environment.

The SECL’s collaboration with the Municipal Corporation Korba indicates a collective effort to ensure the success of the project. The allocated funds will be utilized for various development activities, including landscaping, infrastructure construction, and the creation of recreational facilities. Additionally, efforts will be made to restore and preserve any unique ecological features present in the area, ensuring the sustainability of the eco-tourism spot in the long run.

The transformation of the Manikpur Pokhri mine holds the potential to unlock economic growth and job opportunities for the local community. The influx of tourists is expected to drive the demand for accommodation, restaurants, transportation, and other supporting services. This, in turn, can stimulate entrepreneurship and diversify the local economy beyond traditional coal mining activities.

Furthermore, the development of an eco-tourism destination in the area will enhance the region’s visibility on the tourism map, attracting visitors from both within the country and abroad. Tourists will have the opportunity to witness the unique transformation of a former industrial site into a thriving natural and recreational haven, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of nature and human development.

The SECL’s initiative also highlights its commitment to environmental stewardship. By repurposing the closed coal mine, the company is actively contributing to the restoration and conservation of the surrounding ecosystem. This not only ensures the preservation of natural resources but also promotes environmental awareness and education among visitors.

The decision by the South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) to develop the closed Manikpur Pokhri open-cast coal mine into an eco-tourism spot represents a significant step towards sustainable development and environmental conservation. This venture, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation Korba, aims to create an attractive destination that will promote tourism, generate employment opportunities, and foster economic growth in the region. By repurposing the mine and preserving its unique ecological features, the SECL sets an example for responsible industrial transformation, highlighting the harmonious coexistence of human progress and environmental sustainability.
