Location and Accessibility

Chabimura is situated approximately 82 km from Agartala, the capital city of Tripura. It is about 30 km from Udaipur and just 7.5 km from Amarpur. Though a bit off the beaten path, the journey to Chabimura is scenic and rewarding. To reach the rock carvings, visitors must take a boat ride along the serene Gomati River, followed by a short trek through dense forest trails.

This natural isolation only adds to the mystical aura of the place, making it a perfect getaway for those looking to escape urban life and reconnect with nature and heritage.

The Iconic Rock Carvings of Devtamura

The main attraction at Chabimura lies in the massive rock sculptures carved on the vertical walls of the Devtamura hills. The carvings, believed to date back to the 15th or 16th century, represent various Hindu deities including:

  • Lord Shiva
  • Lord Vishnu
  • Lord Kartika
  • Maa Durga (Mahisasura Mardini)
  • Other gods and goddesses from Hindu mythology

Among these, the most iconic is the image of Goddess Durga, carved at a height of approximately 20 feet. This majestic sculpture, with its fine detailing and sheer size, leaves visitors in awe of the craftsmanship of ancient sculptors.

The carvings are etched on near-vertical rock faces, some rising at 90 degrees, giving the impression of the gods watching over the jungle and river below.

A Trek Through Nature and Spirituality

Reaching the rock carvings is an adventure in itself. After a boat ride on the Gomati River, you need to trek through thick forested hills. The trail is surrounded by tall trees, rare plants, and the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves. The remote location enhances the spiritual feel of the journey, making it not just a sightseeing trip but a pilgrimage of sorts.

Many visitors describe the experience as walking into a world where nature and divinity coexist in harmony.

Why Visit Chabimura?

Here’s why Chabimura should be on your Tripura travel itinerary:

  • Historical Significance: The rock carvings are centuries old and reflect the region’s rich cultural heritage.
  • Adventure Tourism: The location involves trekking, boating, and jungle exploration—perfect for adventure lovers.
  • Spiritual Vibes: The site offers a serene and sacred atmosphere ideal for meditation or quiet reflection.
  • Scenic Beauty: The panoramic views of the Gomati River, dense forests, and rugged hill faces are truly captivating.

Travel Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: October to March, when the weather is pleasant and safe for boating and trekking.
  • What to Carry: Comfortable trekking shoes, water bottles, insect repellent, and a good camera.
  • Local Help: It’s recommended to hire a local guide or boatman who knows the trail and can ensure a safe journey.

Final Thoughts

Chabimura is more than just a tourist spot—it’s a timeless piece of Tripura’s cultural and spiritual identity. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or a spiritual seeker, this hidden gem offers something unique and unforgettable. Far from the chaos of mainstream tourist destinations, Chabimura invites you to explore a world carved in stone and wrapped in the silence of the forest.
