Pala raises demand for crucial road

Shillong MP Vincent Pala renewed his demand for giving NH status to the road connecting Dawki, Ranikor, and Baghmara. The road passes through sensitive border regions and serves as a lifeline for trade and connectivity. According to him, Meghalaya needs stronger infrastructure support to match its economic and tourism growth.

The demand came during a meeting where Pala highlighted the need for central assistance. He said the road is not just important for state traffic but also crucial for cross-border trade with Bangladesh. By securing NH status, the road would receive better funding and long-term maintenance.

Pala argued that Meghalaya’s fragile terrain and frequent landslides make ordinary state funding inadequate. He also noted that improved road quality would attract more tourists to border towns.

CM Sangma’s assurance of follow-up

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma responded positively to Pala’s request. He assured that his government will pursue the matter with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Sangma acknowledged the road’s importance for both trade and security.

He mentioned that the state government has already taken steps to push for NH upgrades. Sangma also promised that official proposals would be sent to the Centre soon. His assurance signals political cooperation despite different party lines.

According to Sangma, Meghalaya has several ongoing road projects, but many still need central approval. He said that giving NH status to this road would ease the financial burden on the state while ensuring stronger upkeep.

Road significance for trade and tourism

The Dawki-Ranikor-Baghmara road has long been a vital link for Meghalaya. Dawki is one of the most active trade routes with Bangladesh. Trucks carrying coal, limestone, and agricultural products frequently use this route. Meanwhile, Baghmara serves as a hub for Garo Hills, connecting to major towns.

Tourism also depends heavily on this road. Dawki is known for its crystal-clear river waters, drawing visitors from across the country. Ranikor offers scenic landscapes and cultural attractions. A smoother road would enhance tourist experiences while boosting local economies.

Additionally, local communities often complain of poor connectivity in rural pockets. Many villages remain cut off during monsoon seasons due to road blockages. NH status would ensure better emergency response and medical access in remote areas.

Challenges in Meghalaya’s road network

Road infrastructure has been a major challenge for Meghalaya. The hilly terrain and heavy rainfall often damage roads. Regular landslides during monsoons make travel risky and costly. While the state government invests heavily, funds fall short of actual requirements.

Experts say that central assistance is vital for long-term solutions. NH projects come with stronger designs and durable construction, suitable for difficult terrains. Moreover, national highways attract more tourism and trade investments.

Several NGOs and local groups have also demanded better road conditions. They argue that rural farmers struggle to transport produce due to poor connectivity. Better roads could increase incomes while reducing transportation losses.

Political cooperation for development

The demand raised by Vincent Pala, a Congress MP, and the assurance from CM Conrad Sangma, a National People’s Party leader, reflect rare political cooperation. In Meghalaya, political differences often slow down development projects. However, in this case, both leaders agree on the road’s strategic value.

Observers believe such cooperation may accelerate project approval. The Union Ministry is more likely to respond positively when multiple leaders press the same demand. If sanctioned, the project could set an example for bipartisan development in the state.

Broader regional importance

Beyond Meghalaya, the road also holds importance for the Northeast region. Dawki serves as a major international trade point, and better connectivity could strengthen India-Bangladesh ties. The central government has been focusing on improving border infrastructure as part of its Act East Policy.

The road also links remote Garo Hills with Shillong and beyond. For local residents, NH status would mean more accessible healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. Better connectivity could also encourage entrepreneurs to set up businesses in small towns.

Environmental concerns remain, as road expansion could affect forests and biodiversity. However, Pala and Sangma stressed the need for eco-friendly designs. They highlighted that sustainable road development can balance growth with conservation.

Looking ahead

The demand for NH status now rests with the Union Ministry. Meghalaya officials are expected to draft a detailed proposal showcasing the road’s economic, cultural, and strategic importance. If approved, the road could receive dedicated central funds and modern upgrades.

Local people remain hopeful that the demand will turn into action soon. Many believe that improved roads could transform their livelihoods. Farmers, traders, and tourism operators see this as a long-awaited opportunity.

Vincent Pala’s push and Conrad Sangma’s assurance together signal a step forward in Meghalaya’s road development story. With central approval, the state could see improved connectivity that matches its growing potential.
