Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on September 15 stressed the importance of preserving the state’s ancient manuscripts, archival records and indigenous script. He said these historical materials reflect Manipur’s identity, culture and civilisational heritage.
The Chief Minister made the remarks during the 44th Archives Week Celebration and Records Exhibition-2026 at the Manipur State Archives Complex in Keishampat, Imphal. The Department of Art & Culture organised the programme. During the event, the government also announced plans to consider incentives for people who protect ancient records.

CM Highlights Value of Ancient Puyas
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh praised members of the public who brought ancient manuscripts and archival documents from their private homes.
He appreciated their efforts to protect historical records. According to him, such contributions show the people’s love for Manipur and its cultural heritage.
The Chief Minister explained that the ancient Puyas, or traditional texts of Manipur, contain valuable information about society and life in earlier periods.
These texts cover subjects such as archaeological remains, traditional house architecture, lifestyles, historical chronicles, stories of queens and medicinal plant knowledge.
Therefore, Khemchand said the records provide important evidence of Manipur’s traditional knowledge system. He also noted that the documents reflect the scientific character of the state’s ancient practices.
Indigenous Script Reflects Manipur’s Identity
The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of Manipur’s indigenous script. He described the script as a matter of pride for the state.
Khemchand stated that Manipur is the only state in Northeast India with its own indigenous script. He said the script and ancient texts together offer important glimpses into the state’s historical identity.
He further observed that these historical traits form the foundation of Manipuri society. As a result, he called for greater efforts to preserve the records for future generations.
Government Considers Incentives for Manuscript Custodians
During his speech, Khemchand said the government was considering incentives for individuals who have preserved and protected ancient records over the years.
He said he had already discussed the proposal with the Minister and Commissioner of Art & Culture. The Chief Minister also instructed the department to prepare and submit a proposal before the State Cabinet.
Furthermore, he assured that the government would provide all possible assistance to move the proposal forward at the earliest.
New Archives Facilities and Publication Launched
The Chief Minister inaugurated the New Stack Room Building of the Manipur State Archives during the programme.
He also launched a Reading and Teaching Programme on old archaic scripts. The initiative aims to encourage greater understanding of historical writing systems and archival materials.
In addition, Khemchand released the 2026 archival publication titled Colonial Tour Records of Manipur. He also opened a records exhibition featuring documents and materials connected with Manipur’s history and heritage.
Manuscripts Displayed at Exhibition
The exhibition included manuscripts and archival contributions from several individuals. The contributors included Nongmaithem Phulendro Meitei, Thoudam Bimolchandra Singh, Laisom Hemjit, Yengkhom Amuthoi Meitei and Chingakham Dorendro.
The event brought together archival custodians, manuscript donors, government officials and other invitees.
