Two Candidates Remain in Contest

The contest for Mizoram’s only Rajya Sabha seat will now be a direct fight between the ruling ZPM and the opposition MNF. Both K. Laltluangkima and Zothansangi Hmar remained in the race after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations expired on Thursday.

Earlier, election authorities scrutinized the nomination papers and found both candidates eligible to contest the election.

ZPM Holds Numerical Advantage

The ruling ZPM currently enjoys a strong majority in the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly with 27 legislators. Therefore, the party enters the Rajya Sabha election with a significant advantage.

In contrast, the opposition MNF holds 10 seats. However, the party has fielded Zothansangi Hmar and hopes to put up a competitive challenge.

BJP and Congress Stay Out of Contest

The BJP, which has two MLAs in the assembly, has decided not to contest the Rajya Sabha election. Similarly, the Congress, which holds one seat, has also stayed away from the race.

As a result, the election has become a straight contest between the state’s ruling party and the principal opposition.
