Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh conferred the prestigious Governor’s Unit Citation on the 20th Battalion of the Assam Rifles on June 29 in recognition of its outstanding service in the state. During an investiture ceremony held at Lok Bhawan in Aizawl, the Governor praised the battalion for securing the Indo-Myanmar border, combating cross-border smuggling, and maintaining regional security.

Governor Honours Assam Rifles Battalion

Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh presented the Governor’s Unit Citation to the 20th Battalion of the Assam Rifles during a ceremonial function at Lok Bhawan in Aizawl. The honour recognises the battalion’s distinguished service, operational excellence, and contribution to maintaining peace and security in the state.

While presenting the citation, the Governor praised the battalion for its professionalism and dedication during its deployment in Mizoram.


Strengthening Security Along the Indo-Myanmar Border

The Governor commended the battalion for safeguarding the Indo-Myanmar border amid complex security challenges and regional instability. According to the Governor, the unit played a crucial role in preventing cross-border smuggling and strengthening border security.

Moreover, he appreciated the battalion’s close coordination with law enforcement agencies and intelligence organisations, which helped curb narcotics trafficking and other illegal cross-border activities.

Referring to the force as the “Sentinels of the North East” and the “Friends of the Hills,” Singh acknowledged the Assam Rifles’ longstanding contribution to maintaining peace in the region.


Community Welfare Beyond Security Duties

Apart from its operational achievements, the Governor highlighted the battalion’s efforts to build stronger ties with local communities.

During its deployment, the unit organised anti-drug awareness campaigns, medical camps, and welfare initiatives for ex-servicemen. These programmes reflected the Assam Rifles’ guiding principles of Seva, Suraksha and Bandhutva (Service, Security and Fraternity).

The Governor said such initiatives strengthened public trust while supporting social development across the region.


Deployment in Mizoram

The 20th Battalion remained deployed at Lunglawn in Mizoram’s Lunglei district from November 12, 2023, to March 19, 2026.

Throughout its tenure, the battalion secured the Indo-Myanmar border, prevented smuggling activities, and carried out several civic action programmes in its area of responsibility.

Its combined focus on security operations and community engagement earned recognition from the state government.


Governor Encourages Future Units

During the ceremony, Governor Singh expressed confidence that future Assam Rifles units would continue the legacy established by the 20th Battalion.

Furthermore, he encouraged personnel to uphold the force’s high standards of professionalism, discipline, and public service while continuing to contribute to peace and stability in Northeast India.


Senior Officials Attend Ceremony

The investiture ceremony was attended by several senior officials, including Brigadier Puspendar Sorayan, Deputy Inspector General of the 23 Sector Assam Rifles, Krashnendra Singh, Pushpak Chief Engineer, and Jaswinder Singh, Commandant of the 20th Battalion.
