Assam Flood Crisis Deepens
The Assam flood crisis has become increasingly severe, with 14 additional deaths reported within 24 hours. The fatalities include seven people from Charaideo, six from Sivasagar and one from Jorhat.
According to ASDMA, the victims included 11 men and three women. One person has also been reported missing in Sivasagar district as authorities continue search and rescue operations.
Sivasagar remains the worst-hit district, with 3,48,555 people affected. Charaideo has reported 1,88,404 affected residents, while 1,26,793 people have been impacted in Jorhat.
Floodwaters have spread across 856 villages and 37 revenue circles. The agricultural sector has suffered heavily, with more than 56,600 hectares of cropland submerged.
Thousands Take Shelter in Relief Camps
More than 3.15 lakh people are currently staying in 363 relief camps and distribution centres established across the affected areas.
NDRF, SDRF personnel and local administration teams have intensified rescue operations. Nearly 1,000 stranded people were evacuated on Friday as floodwaters continued to rise in several locations.
The floods have also caused extensive damage to livestock. More than 17,000 animals and poultry were reportedly washed away during the past 24 hours, while over 3.34 lakh livestock remain affected.
Himanta Biswa Sarma Warns Situation Is Serious
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited a relief camp in Dergaon on Thursday and described the flood situation as serious.
Sarma also warned that the death toll could increase further. He attributed flooding in several areas to a cloudburst in neighbouring Nagaland.
Meanwhile, rising water levels in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries continue to create difficulties for residents and rescue teams across Assam.
