Meta Description: Hemoprova Chutia says her meeting with Badruddin Ajmal was not political, explaining her focus on art, weaving and cultural work in Assam.

Hemoprova Chutia has clarified that her meeting with AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal should not be viewed as a political move, saying she did not enter public life to pursue politics. The Padma Shri awardee’s remarks have drawn attention in Assam amid questions over her interaction with the prominent political leader.

“I did not go for politics,” Hemoprova Chutia said while explaining the circumstances surrounding her meeting with Ajmal. Her clarification places the interaction in the context of her public engagements rather than any political association.

Hemoprova Chutia rejects political interpretation

The remarks by Hemoprova Chutia come as her meeting with Badruddin Ajmal has generated discussion in Assam. Ajmal, the chief of the All India United Democratic Front, is a well-known political figure in the state.

However, Chutia has sought to separate her cultural work from political activity. Her statement indicates that meeting a political leader should not automatically be interpreted as an endorsement of a party or an indication of political ambitions.

The clarification is particularly relevant because Chutia is known primarily for her work as a handloom weaver and artist. The Union government recognised her contribution to the arts when she was named a Padma Shri awardee in 2023.

A Padma Shri honour for Assam’s artist

Hemoprova Chutia was among the Padma Shri awardees announced in 2023. The official Padma Awards notification listed her under the field of Art from Assam. President Droupadi Murmu later conferred the award on her during a civil investiture ceremony in April 2023.

The government described Chutia as a well-known handloom weaver and artist from Assam, highlighting her distinctive skills in handloom weaving. Her recognition placed traditional Assamese craftsmanship in the national spotlight.

Her work has also attracted attention because of the scale and nature of her textile projects. A government publication noted that she created the entire Bhagavad Gita in English on a piece of cloth measuring about 280 feet long and two feet wide.

Hemoprova Chutia’s work remains rooted in weaving

For Hemoprova Chutia, weaving has remained central to her identity as an artist. Her work reflects the long-standing importance of handloom traditions in Assam, where weaving is closely linked with everyday life and cultural expression.

Recent reports have again highlighted her craftsmanship. In July 2026, reports described how she spent more than two years working on a large cloth featuring the Bhagavad Gita, despite not being able to read Sanskrit.

The project has added to her reputation as an artist capable of combining patience, traditional skills and religious themes through textile work. Consequently, her public identity has largely been associated with culture and craftsmanship rather than politics.

Meeting Ajmal draws public attention

The meeting with Badruddin Ajmal has nevertheless attracted attention because of Ajmal’s prominent role in Assam politics. Any interaction between a political leader and a widely recognised public figure can generate speculation, particularly in a politically active state.

However, Hemoprova Chutia has made her position clear. Her statement that she did not enter politics suggests that she does not want the meeting to overshadow her artistic contributions or be interpreted as a declaration of political intent.

At the same time, meeting a political leader does not by itself establish political affiliation. Without a formal announcement or statement indicating otherwise, the interaction remains a meeting between two public figures.

Culture remains Hemoprova Chutia’s focus

Hemoprova Chutia’s clarification brings the focus back to the work that earned her national recognition. Her Padma Shri was awarded for Art, and official records identify her contribution through handloom weaving and artistic craftsmanship.

Her story also reflects the wider recognition of traditional artists from Assam. The 2023 Padma Awards included several awardees from the state in the field of art, underlining the national attention given to regional cultural traditions.

Overall, Hemoprova Chutia has drawn a clear line between her cultural identity and political activity. Her comments indicate that her meeting with Ajmal should be viewed in that context, while her longstanding work continues to centre on weaving, art and the preservation of Assam’s cultural heritage.
