Senapati violence has triggered fresh tension in Manipur after houses were reportedly burnt and a CRPF constable was injured during firing in the Taphou area on Monday, August 24. The incident has renewed concerns about security along sensitive areas where Naga and Kuki communities live close to each other.

The latest clashes followed early-morning incidents of arson in and around Taphou. Security forces were deployed as reports of firing and movement of armed groups raised fears of further escalation.

Senapati violence begins with house fires

The first fire was reported at about 2:40 am at Taphou Kuki, according to local reports. Fire brigade personnel reached the area around 3:30 am. However, people at the site reportedly objected to the firefighters’ arrival.

Further incidents were reported after 4 am near the 9 Manipur Rifles area and Mareimei. Preliminary information indicated that one house in Taphou Kuki was burnt, while another house linked to a Poumai Naga resident was reportedly demolished. A second house belonging to a resident of Phuba village was also reportedly burnt.

India Today NE reported that at least two houses belonging to members of different communities were set ablaze. Police had not immediately confirmed who was responsible for the arson, and the circumstances leading to the fires remained unclear.

CRPF constable injured in firing

The situation became more serious at around 9:20 am when firing broke out while journalists were covering the damaged properties. A 54-year-old constable of the 36th CRPF Battalion sustained a suspected firearm injury while at Liangmai Taphou. He was taken to District Hospital, Senapati, for treatment.

According to the injured personnel, it was not immediately possible to determine where the bullet came from because firing appeared to be taking place from both sides. The account highlights the difficulty faced by security personnel in identifying the source of gunfire during rapidly changing situations.

Meanwhile, another report identified the injured CRPF officer as Sub-Inspector (General Duty) Pradeep Singh of the 36th Battalion and said he suffered a bullet injury to his left foot.

Security response intensifies

Following the Senapati violence, additional security personnel were deployed in Taphou and surrounding areas. Authorities are working to prevent further clashes and restore calm in the affected locations.

Residents have reportedly started leaving some areas because of concerns over renewed violence. Security personnel have also increased their presence around key locations as tensions remain high.

The latest developments come after several incidents of violence and arson in parts of Manipur. Earlier this month, houses were also reportedly burnt in areas around the Senapati-Kangpokpi boundary, adding to concerns over continuing attacks on residential properties.

Community appeals for restraint

The Senapati violence has prompted calls for investigation and restraint. The Taphou Kuki Village Authority condemned the burning of a Kuki-owned house and urged the district administration and police to identify those responsible. It also called for the matter to be addressed through lawful means.

The village authority issued a 24-hour deadline for those involved in the burning to come forward and resolve the matter under Kuki customary law. At the same time, it appealed against actions that could worsen the situation.

However, the identities and affiliations of those responsible for the arson and firing have not been officially established. Allegations about attacks by armed groups remain unverified and should not be treated as confirmed facts.

Fresh tension raises wider security concerns

The Senapati violence comes amid heightened tensions between Naga and Kuki communities following a series of deadly incidents in the region. India Today NE reported that attacks in May led to deaths, hostage-taking and later killings, with the National Investigation Agency probing one related case.

Moreover, recent incidents have increased pressure on security forces to protect vulnerable settlements and prevent retaliatory attacks. In July, a mob attacked an Assam Rifles camp in Senapati after a search operation, prompting the deployment of police and CRPF personnel.

For now, security forces remain deployed around Taphou as officials assess the damage and monitor the situation. Authorities face the immediate task of preventing further violence while determining how the latest arson and firing began.

Overall, the latest Senapati violence underlines the fragile security situation in parts of Manipur. A prompt investigation, protection of civilians and restraint by all sides will be important to prevent the fresh tension from spreading.
