Sajal Kanti Das is facing a CBI case after the agency’s Guwahati branch registered a disproportionate assets case against the retired Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Deputy Chief Engineer.
According to the CBI’s allegations, Das and his wife, Sangita Das, accumulated assets worth about Rs 88.20 lakh beyond their known sources of income during the period from 2016 to 2022. The agency is examining their properties, bank accounts and other financial holdings.
CBI case focuses on alleged disproportionate assets
The CBI has alleged that the couple’s total assets rose from around Rs 39.85 lakh in 2016 to Rs 1,28,66,946 by 2022. The agency is treating the difference as part of its assessment of assets allegedly disproportionate to known sources of income.
The case concerns financial holdings linked to both spouses. The agency’s assessment covers property, deposits and other holdings requiring verification.
Sajal Kanti Das had served as Deputy Chief Engineer with NFR at Jiribam. The CBI’s action now puts the couple’s financial transactions and property holdings under formal scrutiny.
However, the allegations remain subject to investigation, and the registration of a case does not establish guilt.
Properties under the CBI’s scrutiny
The CBI has identified several properties in Assam as part of its investigation. These include a house valued at about Rs 19 lakh, built on five kathas of land at Rangpur in Cachar district.
The agency has also alleged that substantial parcels of land in Udharbond and Lakhipur were held in Sangita Das’s name. In addition, investigators have identified a commercial property on Club Road in Silchar, valued at about Rs 34 lakh, in her name.
A flat on Club Road, Silchar, valued at more than Rs 20 lakh, was allegedly held in Sajal Kanti Das’s name. The CBI is expected to verify ownership records, acquisition costs and the sources of funds linked to these properties.
Bank accounts and deposits examined
Alongside immovable property, the CBI has identified multiple bank accounts maintained separately by Sajal Kanti Das and his wife. The agency has also examined fixed deposits and term deposits involving several lakh rupees.
Financial records can play an important role in disproportionate assets investigations. Such records help investigators trace when assets were acquired and how payments were made.
In this case, the CBI is assessing the couple’s financial position between 2016 and 2022. Therefore, the agency’s findings will depend on the records it verifies and the explanations provided for the assets and transactions under examination.
What the CBI alleges against Sajal Kanti Das
The central allegation is that the couple possessed assets substantially above their known sources of income. The CBI has estimated the alleged disproportionate assets at around Rs 88.20 lakh.
However, an allegation at the investigation stage is not a judicial finding. The figures cited by the agency will remain part of the case record unless and until they are established through the legal process.
The investigation will also need to determine the ownership, acquisition dates and funding sources for the properties and deposits identified by the agency. Moreover, the CBI may examine income, expenditure and other financial records to establish the basis of its calculation.
Investigation will determine next steps
The case against Sajal Kanti Das is at the investigation stage, according to the report published on September 21, 2026. The agency is examining the assets and financial holdings attributed to Das and his wife. It will assess whether the holdings can be explained through legitimate income or documented sources.
As the investigation proceeds, authorities may verify property documents, bank records and other relevant financial material. The couple’s explanations and supporting documents will also form part of the process.
Overall, the CBI case places the alleged mismatch between income and assets at the centre of the inquiry. Further action will depend on the evidence gathered and the findings reached during the investigation. Until then, the allegations against Sajal Kanti Das and his wife remain unproven.
