More than 100 passengers were stranded on the Gangadhar River in Assam on Monday after a passenger boat developed a crack and began taking in water while travelling from Tamarkhat to Kathaltoli. The incident took place near Guma Ferry Ghat in the Tamarhat area of Dhubri district on September 21, according to reports published that afternoon.

According to reports, the bottom of the vessel cracked during the journey, causing water to enter the boat. A portion of the vessel became submerged, while passengers moved towards a higher section to stay above the rising water. Reports said many of those aboard were women and children.

Passengers face tense moments on Gangadhar River

The incident triggered panic as the damaged boat remained in the Gangadhar River. Water reportedly reached waist-to-chest level in some parts of the vessel, leaving passengers in a vulnerable position.

The boat was also carrying an e-rickshaw and more than 20 motorcycles, according to reports. The additional load added to concerns about the vessel’s condition and passenger safety, although the exact cause of the crack has not been established. Officials have not yet publicly confirmed whether overloading contributed.

News Live reported that the boatman managed to bring the vessel towards the riverbank, allowing passengers to escape. However, reports from earlier in the afternoon said details of the rescue and the condition of all passengers were still awaited.

Questions over ferry safety arrangements

The Gangadhar River incident has also raised questions about safety arrangements at the ferry service. Local concerns centre on the equipment available on the vessel and the manner in which the service was being operated.

According to allegations reported by local media, the operator had been running the ferry for an extended period without following prescribed safety norms. Reports also alleged that the vessel did not have a marine engine or adequate life jackets.

These claims have not been independently established. Therefore, any inquiry into the incident would need to determine whether the boat met applicable safety requirements and whether passenger capacity and loading rules were followed.

The incident also highlights the importance of basic safety equipment on river routes. Life jackets, suitable engines and properly maintained vessels can become critical when a boat develops a technical problem midstream.

Gangadhar River route remains important for local travel

The Gangadhar River is an important transport route for communities in the Dhubri region, where ferry services connect settlements and riverine areas. The Kathaltoli-Guma ferry area has previously been reported as a location where people rely on river transport.

That dependence makes the condition of ferry boats particularly important. For many residents, water transport provides a practical link between communities, markets and other services. At the same time, river journeys can become risky when vessels are overloaded or lack safety equipment.

Earlier boat accidents in the Gangadhar River have also highlighted these risks. In February 2026, a country-made boat carrying 22 students capsized near Belpara Char in the Tamarhat area. Nineteen students were rescued, while three were initially reported missing. The earlier incident drew attention to safety concerns surrounding boat travel in the area.

Rescue details and next steps awaited

The latest Gangadhar River incident did not immediately result in a confirmed casualty report in the sources available by Monday afternoon. News reports differed in describing the passengers as stranded and later as having reached the riverbank, so the full sequence of the rescue was not immediately clear.

Authorities have yet to provide a detailed public account of the incident, including the condition of the boat, the number of passengers on board and whether any formal inspection will follow.

Meanwhile, the episode has renewed attention on ferry safety in Dhubri’s riverine areas. A clear assessment of the vessel, its passenger load and the safety equipment available will be important in establishing what happened.

For passengers who depend on the Gangadhar River for daily travel, the incident underlines the need for reliable ferry services and basic safety measures. Further official details are expected to clarify the rescue operation and any action taken over the reported safety concerns.
