Three Officials Die in Mizoram Road Accident
The accident occurred on Thursday when the vehicle carrying four people reportedly veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge near Sataek village.
Doordarshan Aizawl Director (News) Nampibou Marinmai and PIB Additional Director General Engam Pame died in the accident. H Lianvela, a multi-tasking staff member at the CBC field office in Aizawl, also lost his life.
Meanwhile, the driver, Gojendro Dey, sustained severe injuries. Medical staff are treating him at Zoram Medical College and Hospital in Falkawn near Aizawl.
Officials Were Returning to Aizawl
According to a PIB official, the four men were returning to Aizawl after participating in a tree-planting programme at Sialsuk village.
The group had planted the tree in memory of Pame’s brother, who had previously died in an accident.
However, the vehicle reportedly went off the road during the return journey. According to the official, Dey suddenly felt unwell and could not move his limbs or open his eyes.
The vehicle subsequently plunged into the gorge, resulting in the deaths of three occupants.
Bodies Taken to ZMCH
Authorities brought the bodies of the three deceased officials to Zoram Medical College and Hospital on Thursday night.
Doctors scheduled the postmortem examinations for Friday, October 2.
After the autopsy, officials will transport the bodies of Marinmai and Pame to their respective native places in Manipur for the final rites.
Authorities have not provided further details about the exact circumstances that caused the driver’s sudden health issue.
Condolences Pour In
The Mizoram Journalists’ Association visited ZMCH on Thursday and paid their respects to the deceased officials.
Meanwhile, several political leaders expressed condolences following the tragedy.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Mizo National Front president Zoramthanga, and state Congress president Lal Thanzara mourned the deaths.
Lalduhoma described the incident as tragic and untimely. He also expressed solidarity with the families of the three officials.
